iQ3600???
I am looking to buy a device to use for navigation and also data/pic storage. This is for a round the world trip (All continents except Australia) in 4x4.
I am fairly tech averse in as much as I don't like messing around endlessly with computers. I am also fairly tech incompetent. I'd like to know if pics can be downloaded straight from dig camera (Sony) direct to a PC/PDA or do I need a PC? Can any base map be loaded up to a gramin devise or do I have to stick to their maps? If I stick with standard garmin world base maps will I be able to find my way round Russia and Russian cities? I will take maps and compass and stat phone and back up garmin etrex(gift) but really want to try to get away with out taking a lap top. The more I follow, what seem to be endless threads on this subject, the more frustrated I become.
See this forum: http://www.ukgser.com/forums/ The bottom line, as far as I can see, is that there is no gps unit that can upload great quality maps for use everywhere in the world. I think I am right in saying the great maps are available but can not be uploaded to a garmin. They can be uploaded to a laptop PC. Then a fantastically complicated, to my mind, software prog is needed. This software allows a gps to be connected to the PC so that a real time position is shown on maps displayed on the PC. I think I will use a gps with the best uplaoded maps available and printed maps and maybe dowloaded maps and forget the gps/PC interface software. The software I looked at was oziexplore. More like ozipullyourhairout given my desire for a low tech life. |
Not exactly much help, but Ozi have a miniature version of their software that works on PDA and it's much simpler. Check it out, you might like it.
