GPS Model

Thanks for the info Frank. Definitely want the memory card model and agree with you about not needing the S model. I am carrying a laptop with me so that isn't a problem.

Cheers

The S simply costs you money for something you don';t need - barometic preessure sensor and flux gte compass.

The x gives you a memory card. A second hand 60C would be a lot cheaper than a 60Cx .. but the card is worth it .. IMO.

The C is a colour screen .. and you do want that with maping.

-----------------------
On the maping .. you'll neeed a pc with the maps to down load it to the GPS .. you carrying on of them around with you? If not you need a community member with the facilities .. or a friendly internet cafe. If you go with teh community answer then you'll have shipping info..

Garmin Quest but no Mapsource

I really like the sound of Bobs new worldmap program. I´m currently using Garmin´s Worldmap which is pretty inaccurate and would like something better for when I get up to Central and North America.

I have a Garmin Quest I with me but the problem is, I don´t have access to Mapsource to get it onto my GPS.

Anyone got a solution??

Hi Mike,

There's a shareware bit of software called img2gps that can transfer maps.

Its nowhere near as good as mapsource as theres no visual reference to select the maps to send, but once you've figured out which ones it gets the job done.

PM me if you want to have a go with that & I'll tell you how to tell the coverage area for each wanderlust map from the filename.

What about an Emap

hey Guys,
I am running an old Emap. Will that work with bob's stuff?
Can the data be transfered to a CD so I can carry it with me. The memory I have for my emap is two 128 meg cards and a 16 meg card. I have been loading sections of world map on the mem cards.
Can someone enlighten me about this?
I am headed to Mongolia in June.
Wh has the best map for that?
I have the old garmin world map but not the new version.
Thanks,
Bill.

If it works with world map then it will work with bob stuff in the same way.

Don't think any one has a 'good' map for Mongolia.. try gpsmapper
Maps catalogue ,, be warned .. you'll need to be expert in applyiong these maps .. but once you are .. you will have the best info around .. I scan maps out of guide books .. and change them into GPS maps that I up load to the GPS .. might be out of wack by some distance but a lot better than nothing .. and better than 50 paper maps floatring around in my luggage..

I'd not worry about the newer version .. I see little change in Africa for instance ... get bobs map instead .. you get free up dates .. and he takes your tracks to update the map for the next traveller..

Garmin ZUMO 550

Hi Bob

I am looking forward to downloading this software as like so many others have been frustrated with the lack of detail on the Garmin World Map and I'm also fed up with having to carry loads of Maps when on a long trip.

Could you please clarify the following questions:

- Do you have to have the Garmin Worldmap loaded or just Mapsource as now only have Europe as sold my old GPS.
- Will it run on the new Zumo model.

Many Thanks

Julio

Smellybiker 26 Mar 2007 01:44

Hi Julio,

The only maps I have loaded in my GPS are Wanderlust, you dont need the Garmin Worldmap.

You will need a copy of Garmin Mapsource in order to load the maps into your GPS, that software usually comes with the GPS receiver.

The maps *should* work with the Zumo but I've not tried that receiver myself - perhaps someone here who has can comment.

Feel free to download the eval version & try it - if that works on your Zumo then the full product will. The eval version just has a few maps to play with but other than that its exactly the same.

I know.... bad at directions thats why I need a sat nav :)

The garmin system is strret pilot 2610 and i got no disk but i know it has the world map on it.
I do have however a new garmin world map which has mapsource.. I need to buy an extra sat nav so if you have any recomendations I would be grateful and seeing as I am as dumb as a box of rocks when it comes to technology.. any advice on how to pull the wanderlust softwear together with it would also be great :)

I admit to being totally confused.
I am headed to Mongolia via Vladavostok and west.
With the old Emap everything goes on memory cards including Worldmap.
Does anyone know how many megs Russia, Mongolia, K-stan and Turkey are if I use Bob's maps.
I don't understand how this all works? And works together?
Do I switch back and forth between maps or do they overlap on the screen?
Can someone explain?
bill.

As far as the world map goes, its either or, not both.
For Mongolia there is about the same detail on Bobs map as the Garmin.
Russia has lots more... in certain areas. Turky has lots more detail, so do the Stans.

Doing a quick selection in Mapsource for just about all of Russia/Stans/Mongolia/Northern China/Turkey comes to 495 maps or map tiles with a size of 152 megs. With the time to select maps round a route or just be more selective, I'm sure you could get it to less than half that.

I'm going to use Bobs map on my trip starting next week - - Part of the idea being that you keep all your traks/logs/waypoints and send them to Bob... then the map gains in detail and accuracy.
Don't forget the paper maps as well though:cool3:

At the moment not so good. There is to much information on the same level.
I have talked with Bob about it and he will fix it (it's not that big a deal, just
a lot of work) in a next release.:tongue3:
But at the moment you won't be able to find Bangkok or Chiang Mai. You will
find Pu Leab (the 200 inhabitants town I live in) though...

But.... keep in mind it will be fixed, it will be available and it will be for the rest
of your (or probably Bob's) life.
So, Bob: Live long and prosper!

For some reason, I can't get the smellybiker site to send me an email so that I can register. I would really like to buy the map.

Smellybiker 22 Jun 2007 04:57

There were a few minutes of downtime today while the hosting people did some maintenance on their network which might've been the reason.

Just checked & it says you've now got the maps, PM/email me if you have any problems.
