Maps.me North/South America Experience?
Hi All,
I'm researching offline-smartphone apps versus a standalone GPS unit for a forthcoming ride from Alaska to the bottom of South America. So far, maps.me has impressed me in the UK and it looks like the global map coverage it has is impressive, and better than the paid-for Garmin (etc) options. Beyond the challenge of getting a case that is genuinely waterproof, touch-through sensitive and allows charging whilst riding, has anyone got any feedback using maps.me's downloaded maps, particularly in South America? Thanks in advance! |
I found maps.me an excellent app throughout South America. MM uses OSM.
OSM = OpenStreetMap and if you choose to go for a dedicated gps device, their maps are excellent (much better than Garmin: I believe it is now using them because they realise their maps are so poor) and free too. Consider also downloading the iOverlander app/using their website in conjunction with maps.me |
Excellent maps through the back roads around copper canyon Mexico . We used a cell phone as our map and at times had no gps signal so keeping track of where we were at each new road was important. Maps . me had better maps at least in my case.

I live in Colombia and Maps.me is excellent and very hand when you have to cell phone service for Google Maps.
