"Maps with Me" - Really useful smart phone application for RTW trips
 

I have just discovered the app on smart phones called "Maps with me".

You download offline maps when you have wifi, the map user interface is very fast and responsive. You can keep maps for anywhere in the world in your pocket on your smart phone.

Everyone should give this app a try. I think there is a free version.

(This is a completely independent and unbiased review, I do not work for the company or anything like that. I honestly find this product excellent whilst on my current RTW trip)

"MapsWithMe" uses Open Street Map (OSM) data to 'make' its maps.

So does "OSMAnd" ... another android app, between "MapsWithMe" and "OSMAnd" I prefer "OSMAnd". There is a paid version of "OSMAnd" that allows more than 10 maps (think large countries or areas) to be loaded or kept. Try the free ones and see which one you prefer.

I just found that app too. I agree, OSMAnd is better in that it allows turn by turn navigation. I think MapsWithMe has a cleaner, smoother and more responsive interface than OSMAnd. Maybe that's because OSMAnd is performing more complex processing in the background.

Ditto ,, Maps with me ,, only for the reference. Still better than Google Maps ,, in that , you do not need wifi or data, to download massive maps.
For non adventure riders ,, I still think Sygic is the best ,, then Navigator etc. on a smart phone or tab if you are on four wheels.

I just encountered this app and I must say I love it. I wish I discovered it before I bought a Garmin GPS yesterday. Although I think the garmin will be good backup. With the app it's just so practical to plan a trip. On my laptop I open google.maps with terrain enabled so I see where those nice mountain bends are, then I just add bookmarks on the app to drive to.

I guess you are using the "paid for" version of maps.me (the new name for Maps with me)?
I checked out the free version and it would not save any form of data.

It's interesting that you consider the GPS as a backup to the smartphone rather than vice versa.
Did you see/read this thread (best to do so backwards to get the more recent inputs first) before deciding to buy a Garmin?

It would also be interesting to hear (in here or in that other thread) what phone you are using and how you are mounting it to your vehicle.

It sounds to me as though English is not his first language and his poorly worded reply states that it will take time to fix it as they need more staff.

To update, Maps.me now provides turn by turn navigation. It's a great app, but not as customizable as a a real GPS that enables you to set parameters such as avoid major highways, minimize time vs. minimize distance, etc. If you ask Maps.me to give you a route, it gives you just one route option (though I read they are working to improve this).

For me Maps.me has been immensely valuable for forward planning through remote areas with large distances. Crossing Russia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia and then Russia again, I used Maps.me to identify largish towns with fuel and hotels.

So simple. For instance, use the Search function to show hotels, and boom you see that there are three hotels in the town of BFEistan 400 km away.... you actually see all hotel options in all regions for which you've downloaded the maps. Niiiiiiiice :thumbup1: ... much faster and simpler than trying to do the same on GPS.

Locus. It's the biznez. Custom maps baby.

Sound pretty interesting. The app definitely seems useful. I'm sure many people will find it helpful, especially those that travel a lot. To be honest, I am actually impressed with how many useful apps are on the market right now. Moreover, I am happy that app creators are thinking about making phone users' lives much easier. I have recently found an app that allows you to restore your data if you have lost it or it got stolen. It's called RAID DATA RECOVERY. By the way, where can I download the offline maps app?

Latest free version can't see if can share pin sets via messenger/WhatsApp as have previously anyone know if is possible?
