Bertrand - could you point me to the battery fix please ?
Iain |
:smiliex: gladly Iain but there is no link- this is what I did:
I added a thin strip of tape to the back ( narrow bit opposite the contact) of the battery. This prevents the battery from moving- It is a little harder to take the battery out but then...that's the idea! p.s Using a .csv file, I was able to load over 320,000 customised waypoint without affecting the unit.:funmeteryes: and for the nay-sayers who will inevitably say that I will never visit them all- you are quite right - but at least I have them with me and they weigh... nothing  |
Well mine Montana has only had 1 mysterious shut down and that was after 8 hours in direct sunlight behind glass.
Really not that mysterious when you look at the max operating temp and realise it shut down to protect itself It also doesn't like routing when multiple routable maps are enabled as Bertrand states |

It is bolted onto the TT mount which works for the Montana or Monterra:Beach: |
Mine was in a Landcruiser, now I make sure I direct the blower vent over the Montana if doing a long drive into the sun

My Montana has also had 1 unintended shutdown in about 13 months of use.
I turned it on and changed something on the route then before the route was calculated I turned on the camera (it's the 650). It turned blank and stayed blank. It was several month's ago and I don't recall my exact inputs, but I decided that I was asking it to do too many different things at once. I HAVE used it with CNNA and OSM both active although I don't do that often. I timed route calculation on an older Garmin and found that CNNA was fastest, OSM took longer, and having both active took dramatically longer. |
If the battery is at fault, has anyone had any comment from Garmin about the company rectifying the problem instead of employing DIY fixes? If the unit was extremely old such a repair would be acceptable, but as it is a relatively recent model (and not inexpensive), it smacks of not being fit for purpose.

My montana had many shutdowns. It is always when navigating from A to B but then taking a 'road' wich is not on the map. To prevent it from shutting down, I now turn navigation off when riding on a 'road' wich doesnt exist, this keeps my traglog complete ;-)

If you think that such a small glitch means that it is 'not fit for purpose', I'm just wondering if you have a computer whether that be Apple or Windows...? and if so, have you 'smacked it' lately? :wink3: Life is imperfect - the skill is knowing how to navigate it - and the Montana does a great job there- as I keep saying, if you do not like yours, feel free to donate it to me foc :D |
