Need help wit Garmin
After over 50 hours of downloading and 200 miles driving to try other computers I eventually (or rather a friend with a faster connection) managed to get my map updated. Flushed with success we tried to update the Safety camera database as my New machine has files from 2008. It would only allow me to update one and not all of Europe, despite this being what I bought. It did update the file but now says it cant unlock it so I have NO French camera database working. There is both the poi GPI file present and a small UNL (Unlock) file. But it wont go.
Anyone got any Ideas? I have emailed Garmin again because now every time I try to reload the file their downloader crashes with a runtime error. But so far I have not received ANY response from Garmin to ANY of my emails over the last 5 weeks and two machines. They simply do not seem to have any form of after sales service. I have to say this Garmin has been the worst consumer product I have ever bought. Even when it is updated, it wont work properly because it simply does not know half the places I have tried to find on it. I have to have the waypoints to navigate to many places as the smaller towns and villages are not in its supposedly detailed map of Europe. I wish I had bought a tom tom or Viamichelin, because all the places Garmin does not know, they do. |

It seems ok if I use the post code for places in the UK also usually the address. although I haven't been able to get an exact location for ferry ports. These are usually well signed though so ok providing you don't come off the main arterial roads into the port. Mine does not know a good proportion of small villages or hamlets in France try these places Try "le gros chataignier" or the small town of "pussy" in Eastern France It cant find my home address either, but fortunately I can put in a waypoint I got from a Tom Tom. The problem is I cant enter in many destinations in order to navigate to somewhere. Also it has now crapped out the safety camera database also :( I have really had my fill of it. |

Answer after that buy a newer model with SD card. Now that looks like that "GARNER" has close down to supply updates to models whit out SD cards. They are making better money with bulk nuviĀ“s and maps because lifespan of those is two years. Fuc........G :censored: |

The last answer I got said: I hear you and am on your side on this one. This was not my decision and after I saw how many hamlet points there were in France, I really wanted to see them added back in. I will fight the fight with you on this one and hopefully I can get them back in there for you. Still not there though in 2010.3 It seems that some knobheads in the US complaind that they were taken to the wrong place because there was more than one of the same name. As a result we all suffer as result of dumming-down... Would you like the email address so you to can register your displeasure? Its cartography@garmin.com John |
I use OSM maps from Worldwide routable Garmin maps from OpenStreetMap. While this is work in progress, it does allow searching and is routable. No post codes, though. If a place you want in there isn't or if you find anything else wrong or missing you just head to OSM.org, upload your tracks and waypoints and edit them in. One week later you download the corrected map.
In Europe OSM coverage is said to be pretty good. And it's free. |
have been right across europe with the zumo works on post codes no probs only prob i ever had was putting music on it but solved that fairly easily now has a thousand songs. got a scarla rider so hands free on the phone as well...
