Olaf for dummies
Looking for a bit of help......
I have an new Ipad air and want to be able to use it for navigation on an upcoming trip to Morocco and Western Sahara. I've got an old Garmin 176C that a friend loaded Olaf on years ago which has done previous trips and will be a back up........ Due to my cretinous abilitydoh I seem unable to load Olaf via the link on this site. Could some one do a step by step on which one or ones I need to follow and please keep it simple! Do I need to load any thing else before trying to install Olaf? Fingers crossed, Nick |
Olaf is used in conjunction with Mapsource (Windows) or BaseCamp (Win/Mac) to plan routes and/or download map segments to a GPS. It can't be used with IOS.

Is it feasible to load Olaf onto a modern GPS (garmin.....) and then use the Ipad
purely as a remote larger display screen for that unit? I could buy a windows based tablet but I've got the ipad and a lot of useful stuff already on it. Nick |
The iPad is great for what it does but pretty locked down.
Mapsource won't even run under Mac OS so I use an Apple MacBook Air which runs Mapsource in a Windows virtual machine under Parallels Desktop. |
Thanks again Tim.
Could you confirm that if I went out and bought a new Microsoft windows based tablet which would come with windows 8.1 operating system, that Map Source and Olaf would work? For example something like the Microsoft surface 2. Nick |
Both Basecamp and Mapsource work fine under windows.
Your cheapest option- aka Free! Just place the Olaf map on one of your data cartridges- it is only 29,956kb ( just a smidge under 30Mb) A more expensive options- buy a windows OS notebook second hand- loads around- and install Basecamp and Mapsource on it then install Olaf on that pc. A simple solution for you Nick If you need the Olaf map image I have one in my dropbox I can link you to. 1- download the image 2- copy the image in on your Data card 3- Plug it in and away you go! Can't be simpler! |
Many thanks Bertrand. Sorry for the delay, on the road in Morocco.... Will reply to your pm.
