OSM, Garmin zumo 550 and Linux Elementary OS
Hi
As I'm not very good with computers I need very easy instructions for the above mentioned combination. As my trip is heading from Finland to Mongolia and then to Vladivostok the navigation system is definitely needed. What is the correct program to my computer and how can I transfer the map and the route plan to my Carmin. |
Garmin have their own software called basecamp. It's free from their website. It handles map downloads and transfers two and from your Garmin device.
You might also want to look at OSMAND App for android devices which uses the same free maps, and is free to run. |
Create your map on Free worldwide Garmin maps from OpenStreetMap
Download the .img file and put it in the correct folder on your Garmin device. There's some info on this forum and on the openstreetmap FAQ on this. For creating routes on Linux I prefer online tools like MotoPlaner - Motorrad Touren Planung leicht gemacht which allow to download a .gpx version of teh route and/or track which you created. Most Garmin devices pick up those routes if ypu place them in the correct folder on the device. For offline route creation check out QLandKarte GT or its successor QMapShack |
