plotting GPS Coordinates onto a map
Hi
I bought a Garmin eTrex handhelp GPS (old hillwalking type) as an emergency backup. (I haven't installed the european map set onto the garmin.) Most of my planning and navigation will be from the Michelin motoring map. Basically, I want to use the GPS coordinates to locate my position on a road map when I get hopelessly lost. The michelin map doesn't use GPS coordinates. I know that there are complicated formulae for converting one system to another -even at this the michelin maps have their own reference system I guess. So my question is whether there is a simple way to cross reference current GPS coordinates to plot them onto the michelin road map. Wheeee! |
If you get Garmin Mapsource software (free if you know where to look), you can enter a GPS coardinate and then save it as a waypoint.
You could then cross reference the Mapsource map with your michellin. I'm not entirely sure what you're trying to do though. |
I'm not sure, but the calculation method may be shown here:
Geographic coordinate conversion - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia I don't have a GPS or Michelin maps, so I can't confirm. But maybe this will put you on the right track (or just get you hopelessly lost) |
You can download MapSource software for free from the Garmin site here
But you will need to have at least one mapsource product (as in a bought Garmin map) for it to work- else you will get a message during the MapSource installation 'no Garmin product found' and it will fail. |
