Vladivostok to London - how to get the map of Russia into my TomTom Rider? Help pls!
 

As I have been using my TomTom RIDER 2 for a while and it's great in western Europe and US. However as far as Russia is concerned, here the problem begins.

Can any of you save my ass and help me with advice of where to find the map of Russia and get it into my RIDER? Are there any 3rd party map providers that offer a solution for Russia?

Hey there.

Unfortunately unlike the Garmin the TomTom does not let you install custom maps - in fact it's near damn impossible - and as there isn't a TomTom map for Russia it leaves you in in the cold so to speak.

However, you can download these plugins for the Rider

Le Web Bazar !!! GPS Tomtom !!!

which includes an off-road navigator that allows you to use custom bmp files as maps - as long as you set the co-ords for the top left of the file and bottom right.

Not ideal by a long way - and once you're off the track a little I'd go with Garmin - having said all that - I have the original Rider and wouldn't swap it for the world - when we hit Russia later this year we'll be using the off road navigator as a guide to our next stop (using long and lats) but will be primarily using actual paper maps!

There is a Russian Road Atlas that is ridiculous and is updated every couple years(i have no idea why but...) and its in Cyrillic.
The Cyrillic helps you out as it gives you an opportunity to get a local's advice on current road conditions, which GPS maps usually don't...and lets you practice your Russian!
Also, the road atlas gives you pretty accurate estimations of where fuel stations are and cafes' etc.

It can be found in Russia...once you get in...ask any truck/taxi driver and they'll point you to where.

Paper Atlas is the answer!
There is a very good one I bought from Stanfords
Auto Atlas of Russia and Neighbouring countries with Kilometer posts.
It is in Cyrillic but then so are the road signs!!

Consider selling the jackjack...sorry I mean tomtom (:innocent:)
and get a 60csx where you can use Smellybiker's World Map (click my signature)
(or worse scenario gar mins world map)
