which GPS
As someone who is totally at home with maps, compasses (or should that be compii)and hand held GPS's, could anyone help me out with selecting a bike mounted unit c\w map display that will not break the bank. Over the next 4 years I hope to do a Pan American, UK-Capetown-UK and a trans Russia-Far East-Oz and feel that one of these goodies could be useful. Isn't retirement wonderful

Have a look at the Garmin V unit. Very popular with overlanders (I recently bought a 2nd hand one). They have moving map and off-road modes, plenty of memory, and are very rugged. You can even get ruggedised ones through Touratech, or you could "pot" the electronics yourself.

The Garmin GPS V has since been superceded by two newer models that have far more internal memory for storing map data, and cost less.
These are the Garmin 60 series and 76 series. Visit the Garmin website for more information. PanEuropean |
Thanks people, I've bought a Street Pilot 111 from e-bay they seem to be going quite cheaply but thanks for your input. Ride safe, Maja
