Africa carnet-countries
 

Hello all,
Someone started to make a list of all countries in Africa for which you do NOT need a carnet. Great idea. The list grew upto this:
'NON-Carnet countries'
1. Algeria
2. Mali
3. Niger
4. Senegal
5. Mauritania
6. Marroco
7. Burkina Faso
8. Tunesia
9. Ethiopia
10.Libya


People were asked to respond only for 'NON-carnet countries', but personally I am still not sure about Chad, Sudan (not responding does not automatically mean the rest of Africa is to be traveled with Carnet). So maybe we can continue and try to finish the list and divide into 'NON-Carnet'- and Carnet-countries. So people who have the latest on this subject please respond. Many thanks in advance.

Hope I do not spoil the fun, but having travelled recently through Libya, Egypt and Sudan, I have info as follows:

Libya: It might be that you can buy some kind of local carnet. We used our normal ones, worked fine. If you have it anyway, use the normal one, as the local version cost extra.

Egypt: yes you need one and you have to pay another Egyptian pound 1002 for a car (US$ 250) and EP 250 for a motocycle. Border formalities at Soloum a breeze (5 hours).

Sudan: We used our carnets, apparently perfectly normal to do that. So it should not be on the list of non-carnet counties.

I can confirm from previous experience that Tunisia, Morocco and Algeria do not require carnets.

In Benin you don't need a carnet either.

I have a question about carnets in general. Is there a difference from wich country you are. For example is it possible that you don't need a Carnet for Mauritanië if you're from the Netherlands and that you do if you're from Belgium ?

It is my understanding that one needs a Carnet de Passage for a country wherever you are from. It is the country of destinations Customs controls and procedures that dictate whether you need the CdP, not your origin.

Gambia
Ghana
Togo
Benin
Nigeria

I travel in these countries without Cdp you by at the border.

You do not need a Carnet for Ghana. I managed to get into Ghana from Burkina Faso with an official letter from the Ghana Embassy in Ouagadougou - Burkina Faso during the visa application process. You have to pay of course, can't remember the cost but it was relatively expensive. Of course, the customs pretended not to know anything about it and I ended up in the Chief Custom Officials office for 30 mins explaining my case. As per usual in Africa, legislation takes time to filter down. I told them that I had no intention of selling the vehicle, which was indeed true as it was being shipoped back to Europe from Accra. This is their main worry in Ghana, cheap cars being flogged in Ghana.

You must however ask for this letter from the Embassy in Burkina (if coming from there) otherwise they will not give it to you and then its heads or tails whether they will let you through.

I requested a carnet for All african countries including Egypt, just incase.

It will cost 250€
And I need a bank guaraty of 3000€ with a 1300€ estimated value of my bike...
The real value of my bike is around 2200€ but I dont care...

Just to add some more info to the pot, I drove UK to west Africa, on through to Sudan and down to SA and needed a carnet in Benin, Chad and Sudan as well as the usual countries. The officials all seemed to know and recognise what to do with the document too!

I was in the following countries since 2000 and havent needed a carnet

Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Mauritania, Senegal, The Gambia, Guinea Bissau, Guinea Conakry (get it in the embassy along with your visa), Mali, Niger, Burkina, Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast, Togo, Benin, Chad.

The CAR, Cameroon, Gabon and Equatorial Guinea did not need a carnet in 1995 when I was there. Does anyone know if this has changed? What I mean is has anybody actually entered the country without one.
I have often been asked at the border for one, they have insisted I need one, I deny all knowledge of needing one and I have always gotten a laissez paisser.
