Algerian guides - official or unofficial?
 

An Algerian (resident in Algiers) friend has offered to be my guide while driving through the country to Niger. Is he going to be acceptable to the authorities for the southern section or must I still obtain (and pay for) an official guide?

I think that you need an official guide - but I'm not sure.

It would be too easy otherwise for anyone to set up as a guide and charge the amounts asked by the agencies.

When authorities ask for a guide, it has to be an accredited one.
The letter of accreditation is issued by any licensed travel agency.
Even a well know, reputed guide has to proof his accreditation.
