Algerian southern borders
 

Hi guys

Any idea about the situation on the Southern Algerian borders?
Is the border with Mali open ? And what's about the Niger border ?

I met a guy that in 2010 cross the border on his way from Cape Town to Europe but I don't remember if was the Mali border or Niger border .

And I'd like to have more updated information

I very much doubt the Alg-Mali border is open - and even if it was, north Mali is still an area you want to avoid.

I dont recall anyone crossing via Assamaka this year, but I don't think border is actually closed. Plus it's only half a day's ride on the piste to Arlit (highway) where you ought to be in the clear, so the exposure is brief.

Last year some got shafted by the Assamaka officials into paying for an expensive escort to Arlit, but I think the situation was much worse then.
From Arlit to Agadez, if official army escorts are still running, you don't pay. Beyond there, who knows, but I get the feeling the hot spot may have moved to north Nigeria.

I've got the mobile phone number of the chief of the Assamaka border post. He's a nice person and will definitely help if anyone's traveling that route. (French only.)
However he says "everything's cool and fine" even in the middle of a war :)
