Any info on Smara, Morocco
If anyone has any information to share on Smara and the road from Tata to Smara, Iºd greatly appreciate it.

Tata to Smara???? There is no road. There is an asphalt road from Fam el Hisn to Assa. Open. From Assa to Zag is asphalt, but not free for tourists. After Zag only piste.
Smara is a small town with a few simlpe hotels. Not much to see. There was a nice camp not far away, but the french owner died. |
There's a route from Assa to Samara in Chris Scott's Sahara Overland guidebook. From the Morocco topo maps it looks like there's a direct road/track link from Tata to Assa.

I was in Smara in August, doing the Smara - Assa route (but the other way around). That is M13 in the Sahara Overland route. Fantastic route, impressive scenery, absolutely to be enjoyed and lovely. You will need 2 days however to do the loop. I missed out on a few waypoints but the route is very clear.
There is not much to see / do in Smara. Sleepy little desert town. Grilled chicken with cold chips available in the main street. Enjoy it. Cedric |
thx
thanks for the responses. i will check it out in October.

Not too much going on in Smara, but a quirky and historically interesting place if you have a read up on the whole southern Morocco/WS area. Most won't be impressed or interested I guess, but if you get there by piste you do get a sense of having arrived somewhere...
Easy enough to do a sealed road triangle in and out from the paved coastal road. Worth going as it's off the beaten track - but in the nicest way possible please don't send hundreds of drunken rally cars there ;-p |
