Availability of fuel (essence) in the Adrar region
Hi friends,
I am looking for recent information about the availability of petrol (essence) in the Adrar region, possibly also from "private sellers"; in particular in Akjoujt, Choum, Chinguetti, Ouadane and Aoujeft (besides Atar where I assume that's available). I know the overall situation from a previous trip of a few years ago (2 bikes alone, we just found petrol in Atar and Ouadane from gas stations and Choum from private sellers, though we did not really search for it in other places). So I'd only be interested in recent and specific info, not much on generic advice. Thanks! Nicola |
I was there last November and we found petrol/essence/gasoline at the pumps in Atar (which suprised our local contact!) as well as in drums on the side of the road. There was a guy offering petrol and diesel in Choum (he will find you if you ride through slowly!) There was petrol available from drums in Chinguetti (ask at the fuel station in town and they'll take you) 1.5 times the price of Atar, but you can't blame them for that! I don't think we tried for fuel in Ouardanne, but there is a guide agency that will show up when you stop at the checkpoint who will probably know someone with a jerrycan or two, but of course, the further it has to be brought from Atar, (or Algeria!) the more it costs. If you're down around Ouagchodda or Oujeft and you're desperate, the farmers may have petrol powered irrigation/well head pumps, but I couldn't be sure - just as likely to be diesel I suppose.
The thing that suprised me the most about Mauri was the lack of mopeds/mobilettes/small motorcycles, so there's not the demand for petrol that you get elsewhere in Africa (particularly Maroc) Have a great trip, Simon. |
Thanks!
We are back from our short trip so for the records, we found petrol in: -Chami on the NDB-NCK road (gas station, we were told there's another one selling petrol around km 240), ~450 um/l -Nouamghar, fisherman keep some tanks for the boats and sell it for a price I'm too embarrassed to quote -Akjoujt (from drums; gas stations don't keep it): 400 um/l and wondering why it's cheaper than at the pump... -El Meddah, which came as a real surprise... 500 um/l -Oujeft, at the gas station but from drums, 500 um/l -Atar, at gas stations (I think it was around 450) -Choum (from drums), 500 um/l -Tmeimichat, though we met a group from Lativia on KTMs who claimed two of their bikes died a few kms after filling the tank therein, so we skipped it. Searched but found no petrol in Bennichchab. Did not ask elsewhere, but were very lucky to get some from groups travelling with support trucks a couple of times... |
