Bir Mogrein pasable?
 

Hi there.
We'll be doing MAuretania in 4 4x4's entering via Dakhlet, Atar, Zouerat and I was wondering whether it is possible to go back to Western Sahara via Bir Mogrein/Zemmour.
SO2 mentions it is possible, but not recomended due to possible banditry, etc.
Anybody has doen it recently?

I've just asked the same question on Sub sahara Forum. Lets hope we get a reply! I didnt know about this bandit stuff - actually I dont know anything about this route!

It's a handy short cut to the desert but has been closed to tourists for years.

I have read this link which brought me to the idea of a 'short cut' in the first place...
However it still doesn't explain whether it is possible to get through. Does is it mean it is forbidden to drive through (and we will be send back on an army check point) or is it just not recomended to take the route?

Yes for years from Maroc to Mori - and almost certainly Yes from Mori back to Mk.
The Mauritanians don't care so much but the Moroccans don't want you there - it requires crossing a band of Free Polisario land (neither Mk or Mr) where neither can guarantee your safety.

Dear travellers,

Do not try the route Bir Moghrein-Morocco.
You will have to cross the Free Polisario zone. On 10 Oktober 2004 at 16.00h we were stopped there by a heavy-armed polisario group. My wife managed to make a Thuraya-call to our family, and exactly 50 hours later we were liberated by Maury forces.
They explained us that normally they never cross their border for this kind of actions, and we promised them to warn all travellers for this route.
So please take my advice!
