bordercrossing Morocco-Mauritania, other then Nouadhibou??
Hello, does anyone know if there is a possibility to cross the Morocco-Mauritania border other then the one in Nouadhibou? Would like to enter Mauritania from the Western Sahara. Thx, Karel |
Karel,
December of last year I spoke with a french guy who tried to re-enter Marocco on GSP and piste / track other then Nouadhibou. What I heard from him is that quite often there are minefields and a sort of Berlin Wall (a barb-wire fenc) across the desert. Also heavy armed military are patrolling in the area. All of this has to do with the Polisario conflict. They came across with help from friendly (????) Maroccan military. But this was after they were stopped under gunpoint. When they declared to have the French Nationality the military turned by and helped them. But I wouldn't count on it to happen to everybody. |
Hi Karel
There is definitly no other way into mauritania, I asked a month ago. It is also difficult to try it illegally. It is however possible toi go from Mauritania to Morocco via Bir Mogrein. I know a few people who have done it, they had to wait 1-2 days on the Moroccan side but theý had no problems. |
Hi,
Travel from Laayoune (al-ayun) via Bir Mogrein to Zouérat, it was possible in the past.... I am checking if it is possible now. |
This is what you need.
http://www.sahara-mili.net/images/bam/bamp002.png (map to tracks in western Sahara ,the "SandWall" and its allowed (?) crossings ) AFAIK , both sides of the sand-wall are extremely mined , so be rather carefull. Enjoy. |
Even if crossing from Western Sahara to Mauritania at the Nouâdhibou border post, you do not have to continue to Nouâdhibou. If you want to take the beautiful piste to Atar or Choum, just turn left after you cross the border, and follow the rail lines. We did this in Feb, and they are building a road along the south of the railway, so it is easy to find. Graham |
According to the map, it is possible to go via Laayoune to Bir Moghrein... There is a good road, even a passage trough the wall.. But is there also a border post? |
