Bringing GPS and laptop to tunisia a problem?
Hi,
I hear several stories of people hiding their GPSses and laptops upon entering Tunisia in order to prevent problems at customs. Is this really necessary? What problems could occur is you don't hide these items? Cheers, Corné |
sometimes
People sometimes have problems (Chris Scott amongst them!).
It's very little hassle to avoid even the chance of a problem. Pack 'em in Genoa/Marseilles, and get them out once the other side of Customs. Sam. |
Yeap!
I got a lot of hassle in 2004 because of the GPS. The laptop was well hidden, but they spotted the dash support of the GPS and started demanding for the GPS. Afterall it was nothing special. I had to wait about half hour for the duane issue a permit for entering with a GPS. But to avoid time delays, its better to have everything electronic device well hiden. Cheers, José |
Libya
I also heard libya are a bit sticky about it too. that true?

At least from my single experience in 2004, Lybia did not presented any problem.
At the border, they only asked to open the car doors, they took a quick look and nothing else. José |

Again, you're best off keeping it (exciting shiny stuff!) out of site (as well as the mounts/antennas etc. etc. until you need it).

LY Jan '06
Hi,
No problems whatsoever with Libyan customs personnel in January 2006, 3 bikes, one LC. All with GPS mounts. But yes, TN border officials asked us about GPSes on exiting the country and we simply explained... (hm, find your own excuse, you can also say Santa's bringing one for you to Tripoli)... we had none. That was it. I believe Libyan officials would be stupid not to expect this kind of tourists to bring GPS devices in. But repeating, no such hassle as in TN. January 2006. Interestingly, in 2004 I crossed LY from EG and nobody asked me anything about GPS on TN entry. But again, hiding the unit if you're so tight on time you can't afford an hour with TN bureaucracy shouldn't be a problem. Anyway, you're just going to play a bit in the sand around Douz, AREN'T YOU? ;) |
