Camel trekking Egypt or Morocco?
 

Hi all,
I will be coming from Tanzania and trying to determine if I want to go to Morocco or Egypt after to do a camel trek. I have been to Morocco, but only Rabat for work and it was quick in and out trip but part of me is like "go somewhere new" but I never saw any of the desert from Morocco. I have heard less than friendly things about Egypt.... but never been so that's a bit biased I know.
Anyone done camel trekking in both and have thoughts on this?

Or why did you absolutely LOVE doing a camel trip in Morocco or Egypt?

I have not done camel treks in either of these places, but I have elsewhere.

There's a big difference between organising one locally for yourself and by yourself, or just joining a regular tour group.
Generally, it's better to try the latter a couple of times before attempting the former, especially if you're alone and know nothing.
The former requires a bit of street wisdom and a common language, or previous experience, plus ideally, a few mates to help share the burden. Otherwise it usually ends up with you being over-charged and under-satisfied.

I think it would not be too hard to organise a one-weeker anywhere between Dakhla, Farafra and Bahariya, and probably southern Sinai too.

Assuming part of your motivation is to get away from it all out into the wild desert, in my opinion the Morocco desert would be the least satisfying of the Saharan countries for camel treks. From what I know, most occur between Erg Chebbi and Zagora, a pretty busy area with other desert tourists. IMO, in Morocco you're better off mule trekking up in the mountains.

Thanks Chris. Yes I wanted to get away from the general crowds. But I do want to see the Sahara.

But if I Have to join a group, I am ok with that as long as it's not more than a few people. I am still researching, but thanks for the tips and feel free to share more ideas!

A friend has done a four day trek in the Erg Chigaga region of Morocco but it's best to do this in hamada (stony desert) than sand as you won't want to be riding the beasts for long and walking in sand is terribly tiring.
