Campsite near Atar?
Hi
I heard that there should be a campsite near Atar, and if I remember correct, it is owned by a Dutch bloke. Anybody knows the place, coordinates? Thanks mhoey Around the World Journey | mhoey |

Just spoke with the owner of camp Sahara near Atar
Just received a mail from the owner (Just) of the campsite near Atar. It is open all year around and the situation is not risky according to him. He said Mauritania was worth visiting. Right now he is back in EU of personal reasons, but will be back on the campsite 25OVT2009.
I'm also waiting on a reply from a Couch Surfing (CouchSurfing - Participate in Creating a Better World, One Couch At A Time) guy living in Mauritania. I will hook up with him and see some of the country. Nothing better than being together with a local. In this way you get the real thing of the country you are visiting, and not just staying at a dull hotel. I will head for the camp during a couple of weeks. So if anyone is going down there? lets drink a beer! Right now I will find a cab here in Rabat and head for the Mauritanian embassy, hopefully to pick up my first invitation Visa. Will head from Rabat tomorrow. See you out there. mhoey Around the World Journey | mhoey |

There are ways and means to obtain beer in Atar.......Justus can point you in the right direction.
Having stayed there twice, I can also confirm that Bab Sahara is a nice campsite. There is also a workshop on site if you need to work on your vehicle. |
Relly nice campsite. Stayed there for 3 nights. The owner was not present. So he had some locals to keep the site running. One of the guys was Mohammed, mysterious bloke, never got clever on him. But it was a good stay. On my second day in Mauritania I had all the beers I could ever want! So it is not difficult to get alcohol in Mauritania. Even at a police check point on the way to Atar I was offered Mauritanian woman, but kindly rejected the offer coming from an official. The safety and situation in Mauritania is fine, no bad episodes, I even rode at evening time after sunset. People are nice and welcoming. They even stop to see if you are okay, I you are having a break in the side of the road. The only place I didn't like was Nouakchott!
The police gets more gready on the way down south of Mauritania, but they got nothing from me. Just replied them "Do you think I am a bank?" and they laughed! I can only recommand to visit Bab Sahara, especially if the owner is present! mhoey www.mhoey.eu |
