Can you travel through Algeria??
We are planing a trip form Denmark to Cape Town, Jan 08, and would like to take the rute through Algeria over Tamanghasset to Niger. Would like to know if anybody knows if it's possible to take that route... Is it to dangerous or is that just something your foreign ministry tells you. :-) Have anybody done the trip lately and have any good advices?
Hope somebody can help.. Simon and Trine |
Doing it in October
Me and a friend are doing the same trip on motorbikes starting october 7th from Copenhagen, we are communication with the travel agency in Algeria right now and they want 1200 euros for their guide to escort us all the way from Algiers to Ain Guezzam.
We are trying to negotiate a bit with them, and maybe try to do the first 200 kilometers in the northern Algeria on our own so we can explore a bit, but we don't know if this is feasible yet. I'll be sure to let you know my findings. Gunnar i assume you mean Jan 09.. |
:thumbup1:Done the trip this year. We went through Tunisia and over the border near Nefta. We picked up our pre arranged guide at the border. He was 50 euros a day for three days down to In Salah, then we had a Toureg guide from there to Tam, a trip to Assekrem and then on to Bordj-Mokhtar at 65 euros a day. It was ment t be 10 days in totall but because of car trouble turned into 13, but struck a deal and got some knocked off.
The guide company was recomended by Chris Scott and are Tanzerouft voyages. They were fine, but while the first one (a geology student) spoke good English and payed for his own room. The Toureg guide expected us to pay for everything and didn't speak French or English. |

Our trip north was fine - apart from getting stuck in In Salah with the President's visit and needing to do a long 37 hour shift at the wheel to make the border before my visa died. cheers, Richard |

Hello Richard
Glad to hear you made it back ok, have your ears stopped ringing yet? The Shogun just got better and better, apart from the welding on the chassis eventually breaking halfway accross the dessert) Attachment 1592 Got that fixed properly in Bordj, and had no more problems. Will |

Algeria
I am making the trip In April - coming over from Spain by ferry to Oran and then right along the coast Tunisia, Libya, Egypt), up through Jordan and Syria and back through Turkey.
For Algeria you have to use an agent on the ground in order to get visas pre-organised. Once you have submitted passport information to them they will send you a support letter which you take to the Algerian embassy to get the visa in advance. You have to have a guide with you during your stay there. I know all this because I run a travel company and we specialise in that part of the world. Nick |
Hi,
>You have to have a guide with you during your stay there. this applies for the southern part of the country only. There is more freedom in the north (but I would take a guide there anyway). Beginning with and south of Kerzaz, Ghardaia and Taleb Larbi you need a guide. North of it it is not compulsory. When entering at Algiers with a 4x4 you need a guide to leave the harbor. Most of the tour companies in Algeria insist on escort by one of their guide from border to border to prevent any issue to fall back on them. Best regards, Yves |
