Carnet for Sudan, Egypt and Saudi

Hi,
I am presently in Ethiopia waiting to get a visa for Sudan. I have had a few delays on my trip and as a result my carnet has expired.
Can anyone advise if I actually need a carnet for Sudan.
Also how about Saudi Arabia, I am getting both it is needed and not needed.
Finally I have heard that it is possible now to get an "Egyptian Carnet" does anyone know anything about this.
Thanks

schenkel 25 Jan 2015 20:13

Carnet is required for Sudan but if you haven't got one they can issue you with a (form #25). It can cost some money but I do not know how much but it is worth asking for that form though.
Saudi Arabia does not require carnet as far as the RAC in the UK.
As for Egypt, they definitely require it, but if you ain't got one they will accept a securing deposit which you will need to claim back at point of exit.

Mandm, where are you now?

When you get to Aswan,Egypt border, just ask for TIP (temporary Import paper)
May take you few days(took me 3 days back in December 2012)
Be very patient,polite and smile.
They will try to sell (bogus Egypt carnet)don't buy it! Ask for TIP
I payed for "TIP"refundable $800usd,which I got back in Taba border with Israel, make sure in Taba you stay there until you get your refund, they will try to send you to another border with near by Jordan( you won't get your refund there)
In Aswan ,border when you get off from ferry ,There is a lot of place for bush camp, walking distance.
Just cross train tracks and head for desert ( I camp there 7days waiting for cargo boat with my motorbike)
In Aswan city, take train or taxi, you could stay( for free)at Catholic Church near Mc Donald's,super friendly Italian fathers allow me to stay for x-mass in their garden, very save in the middle city, hot shower too.
I'm not sure about your future plans but don't miss Israel,I could give some great tips there.

Carnet for Egypt

Did you find out anymore about the carnet for Egypt?

In a similar situation currently in Kenya and our carnet expires in a month. Don't really want to get a new one or pay 800% that the RAC charges.

Any help appreciated!

I am still stuck in Ethiopia waiting for my vehicle to be fixed so I cannot help as yet.

Sudan Carnet

How are you getting on with repairs? We are now in Ethiopia too.

Would be great if you could let us know how you get on with Sudan. I think our carnet will expire as we leave Ethiopia.

Hi,
I am interested in coming the other way. I am in turkey now with my bike and want to go east africa and ride to the west and leave via morocco. Currently thinking i ship to israel, ride to jordan, then either ship bike to djibouti or transit through saudi and take ferry to sudan.

I would appreciate any info on your experiences - especially because i want to do this without the carnet.

any info would be helpful.

cheers,
regie

It sounds like the $800 TIP is the way around the carnet requirement.

Do you need to return to the same place you entered?

Or can you enter from Aswan (Southern Egypt) and exit via Libya?
Would they refund you the $800 at the Libya border?
What if they don't have the money?

Thank you!

Can anyone confirm that the TIP from 2012 is still acceptable??

Hey,

I am interested to know if it is possible to take a motorcycle through Saudi on a 72 hour transit visa Northbound, coming from Sudan? I have a British/Aus/NZ passport. Anyone know if its open to motos?

schenkel 8 May 2016 11:10

Last time I checked at the Saudi embassy in Khartoum in September 2015 I was told: No foreign transit motorbikes allowed in Saudi roads, FULL STOP. Forget it.
But having said that, there is one option:
Ride all the way to (Sawakin, Sudan), put the bike on the ferry heading to Jeddah. Once in Jeddah you will only be allowed to transport your bike on the back of a lorry to an exit point (say Jordan) probably on the back of a lorry. You will not be allowed to ride it on Saudi roads.

Damn fml, that sucks lol. Trying to find a route out of Africa.

Take the $800 TIP hit and go through Egypt, and ship out from the north, or with possible problems crossing sinai into Israel/Jordan and shipping out from there

Take the Saudi route, with the bike on a lorry

Ship straight up through the Suez if thats even possible

Or the route always dreamed of, somehow find a way from Sudan through Chad into Niger then up through Algeria and probably get kidnapped.

What have others been doing recently?

schenkel 8 May 2016 12:49

Yes Africa and Middle East sucks when it comes to travel.
What is your route wanted?
