Carnet in West Africa
I have heard, a couple of times, that it is not necessary to have a Carnet de Passage for the west African countries (Morocco, Mali, Mauritania, Senegal and Cote d’Ivoire), but the Danish authorities says I need one for all the mentioned countries except Morocco.
I’m not really sure who's right. Does someone have updated information??? Regards Rune |
We found that having a Carnet in West and North Africa made things a lot easier. Unfortunatly I can't tell you if it's the law or not to have one in the countrys you mentioned, but we were asked for it at all the borders(exept Morocco), and quite often at checkpoints far inside each country. It seemed obvious to us, that if we didn't show them one, they'd start trying to give us "fines". When they saw it, they often were dissapointed (since no money was coming their way...) and impatiantly sent us off.
On the otherhand, I'm sure you could get away without one, but would have to pay your way through sometimes. East Africa was very differant and we met several people travelling without a carnet who had no problems. Few of the customs officers knew what to do with ours when we handed it over! At the moment you definitly need one for Senegal if the car is more than five years of age. You do not need one for the other countries mentioned.
