Carnet RIM and/or Mali ?
 

Hello,

Doing Rotterdam - Bamako in december07 / januari08. 4 cars.
I read reports that a Carnet might become mandatory for RIM, or at least is heavily recommended.

Does anyone have information on this?
and the same for RIM/Mali border: is a carnet mandatory / recommended?

We do want to sell the cars in Bamako.

both countries you can enter without carnet.

the recently rumour about needing a carnet for mauri soon
is in my opinion exactly that, a rumour...

to be on the save side, look again here, or any other sahara
board, before you leave to get up to date info, embassy info may be wrong.

Darn these rumours!

really ?
normally germany is known to have bad service,
but a carnet, if you really need it fast, and go straight to the
touring club headoffice, you can arrange everything in one day.

i was on that route last year, at the mauri border they ask me 4 carnet, i haven't, so they make me a passe avant document (3euro). it was the same
4 senegal, but only if the vehicle it have less then 5 years. and in mali too.
have a nice trip.

I don't know now if RIM will apply exactly what declared about carnet...
Last year, No Problem.

Mali: one month ago, entering from South side (B.Faso) noone ask for the Carnet (the same for Togo, B.Faso, Benin). They had quickly delivered the pass-avant at 5000CFA.
Both our 4x4 was older than 5 years.

Arranging through the UK RAC is normally a slow process, then there is the 'bond' to arrange, time to travel down there etc. etc.

My guess is, if the rumours ever turn out to be true, then there will be a 'grey period' where solutions are possible.

But 'guesses' and 'rumours' - are not good for plans or nerves!

Did the Malian Authorities stamp anything in your passport?
It would of course for car-selling (and flying back) be convenient if this was not the case !

Not Yet... we leaved the cars in BKo and flight home.
When back again in BKo we get a 3month extension of Pass-Avant at Central Douane for 20€

No more infos about selling cars there...

Vanaf 23 december woon ik met mijn gezin in Bamako, voor minimaal 2 jaar. Ik wil dan de beschikking hebben over een goede auto. Daarbij denken we aan een Toyota landcruiser. Er is veel onduidelijkheid over de mogelijkheid daar een goede landcruiser (ouder model, waaraan je zelf kunt sleutelen en waarmee je ook in de kleinere garagebedrijfjes geholpen kunt worden) te kopen.

Met welke typen auto rijden jullie naar Bamako?
Wellicht kunnen we iets voor elkaar betekenen.

Mochten jullie nog even in Nederland zijn, dan kunnen we wellicht contact met elkaar opnemen?

We are doing London-Mali in a Merc 300, which we would like to sell in the end of the trip. We are also worried about our passports getting stamped and the Malian border and then having problems flying out [without the Merc!]

Hereby my post in (ramshakle) English:

I'll be living in bamako with my family for at least 2 years, starting next december 23rd. For that period I'm looking for a proper car. (we are thinking Toyota landcruiser. There is a lot unclear about the possibility of buying good Landcruisers there old model, which you can mend yourself and which can be repaired in the smaller repairshops in the villeges).
I therefor asked what kind of cars are being driven to mali. Maybe there could be a deal....

We are looking for a 4x4, preferrably an old type of Toyota..........

No Carnet
 

Especially if you want to sell the cars I wouldn't take a Carnet. First, its not needed, and will cost you at least 200€ qnd paperwork. Second, without the carnet, there's no more hassle once the car is sold.


If Landcruisers are hard to find in Burkina, why not take a toyota corolla?

i just returned from mauritania this week. mauritanians on hand hand want to ease all travel restrictions. i met with the tourism director of the ministry of tourism and cottage industries. she said that they will fight for the no carnet rule and waving visa requirments for most EU citizens.

However, when applying for a mauri visa in switzerland this week, they asked us to show our carnet de passage. some other participants of the budapest-bamako were asked for their carnet in other mauri embassies in europe.

in my assesment, the carnet de passage is needed by some embassies in europe yet it is not required in mauritania. in mauritania you have to register your car with customs at the border and you'll get a stamp with your vehicle's particulars.
