Not a peak, but the easily accessed panorama at Assekrem takes some beating.
Having said that I'd like to finish getting to the top of Jebel Uweinat and especially Garet el Djenoun (below) one day.

There was a guy Ginge Fullen mentioned in the Sahara book who climbed all the highest peaks in each African country (after doing all in Europe and before heading for RotW). Most in the Saharan summits were easy walks apart from Bikku Bitti in Libya Dohone which was by far the hardest one to tick off on the whole continent. I don't think the view out of there was that great, either.

Hello Chris,

Garet el Djenoun is a dream for me, but need some climbing skills with ropes.
I have climbed Tahat ( highest peak of algeria ),assekrem, telertheba peak in amadror, akar akar.

So they say about the classic route from the southeast, although I understood it as more of a precaution than essential. There is also a western (original) route.

On the classic route we misunderstood a French or Italian description, or just miscalculated the effort and water required. There were pea soup gueltas; with a filter we could have kept going. My 2005 report here.

We also halfheartedly tried Telertheba in 2003, but from probably the wrong? (north) side so soon gave up. Water was a problem too.

I once found a very detailed report of the four-month 1976 British Hoggar Mountains and Bilma Sands Expedition. On the way back from doing Nguigmi-Dirkou with Landrovers able to run dual rear wheels through the ergs, they ticked off some climbs in the Hoggar area, including Telertheba and Iharen, until their gear got pinched.

Do you have pics from Telertheba and Akar Akar?

About telertheba the easiest path is to follow the oued from north-east to around the wall.
No water in the oued when we was here, need bring with you.
Amazing view 1200 meters above reg of amadror.

View from telertheba , same as your old picture :

What is the title of your book expedition ?

Been up Emi Koussi last month (highest peak in Sahara, 3415m) though we did not quite go up to the peak as we wanted to spend time in the caldera, the peak would have been another two hours away from the pass we took at 3160 metres. It is a fairly easy 3 day walk to get up at a shallow gradient, with camel support suitable for anyone with a reasonable level of fitness (unsupported would be a different story...). The challenge is to organize the logistics of getting to the base of mountain in the first place, the rest is easy. Some photos of the ascent here: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?...6435853&type=1

Another difficult to access and very remote mountain is Jebel Uwenat smack on the Libyia-Egypt-Sudan border. An unsupported 2-3 day trek to the summit (1834m) is quite a challenge. Account of our last ascent here: http://www.fjexpeditions.com/expedit...ov09/nov09.htm The mountain is not accessible at the moment due to the Libyan situation, keeping fingers crossed that things might improve by '15 spring.

I know Ginge Fullen is organizing another trip back to Pic Bette (corrupted to Bikku Bitti) in the NE Tibesti next autumn (about as extreme Sahara trip as imaginable these days), he has place for one or two extra companions. If anyone is seriously interested, PM me for details.

Thanks for Telertheba clarification. I seem to recall the 1976 Brits followed the oued from the northwest side but had some waterfall to get round?

Yes, looks like the same point of view over Amadror.

Not sure what you mean - this one maybe?
The cover is halfway up Tazat near Zaouatallaz.

Good luck to Ginge on BB. He does like a challenge!

There is also this route from northwest side, but more difficult (cliffs of fall), and i don't know if you can climb here without alpinist skills and rapes.
I don't know also if there will be water here (depends if it rained before).

No, i spoke about the book of the Brit expedition.
I think the title is "1976 British Hoggar Mountains and Bilma Sands Expedition" ?

Chris Scott 16 Mar 2014 22:21

Correct. More by one of the Hoggar climbers here. They ticked off a lot of peaks.
