if there is no more convoy from Dakhla (Marocco) to Maretania, how I could obtain a passage if I travel without car?

You hang out at the camping in Dakhla and try to get a lift - 'no convoy' means no military escort (so we hear) - travellers are still going through every day, but not all in lone long line.

If there are no more convoys, is the route open without mines, or do I neeed to get a guide.

Another question has anyone gone anywhere serious on an MZ, no stop laughing, not a 2 stroke, the modern four stroke mastiff. The bike uses the later 660 tenere engine and good quality bits. the only fly in the ointment seems to be its liquid cooled.

I think you are confusing the (possibly former?) military escort/convoy from Dakhla (Mk) to the Maroc/Mori border with the moderate need for guides in Mori from NDB along the beach route to NKT. We met a couple of German guys on Mastiffs in the Tunis last month. He reckons the rims arent so hot, the engine is fine if heavy (watercooling is becoming the norm and is desirable for longevity) and he'd managed to cram on a 27L KTM-R tank which is handy. And of course MZs are a whole lot cheaper. But for me that ring-ding dinging and 'air' brakes from my late teens still leaves deep scars - one under my chin, infact ;-)

If the convoy no longer runs ie there still the whole DKA camp, into NDU and back out again and the passport drop and pickup.
Ok i think I understand needing the guide for the parc section.
For the beach section, do bikes normally cut inland at Tiouilit ?
Final question what sort of speed should I allow for on the coast road downpast tan tan, I think its black top but with multiple check points. has anyone worked out an average speed, or would it just be too depressing

Tan Tan to Dakhla is fast and easy: I did Dakhla to Nouadhibou in two days with a wanked out Land Rover SIII.
I then spent two days in Dakhla doing douanes, exit visas etc. It is a nice town, and quite fun. Very good campsite on the way in, (well signed) with bags of local info from fello travellers.
Nouadhibou to Nouakchott 4 days approx (I dawdled a bit in the Banque d'Arguin)
Does that answer the question...?

Dont know, but someone else soon will.

Wherever - further down towards NKT the beach is blocked by storm rocks I was told

It's as fast as you like, if the convoy is abandoned then the checkpoints will be less serious - and they were never that bad anyway.

Hi all,

I've just returned from Mauritania. The military convoy still runs, altough locals told me that it would end for turists by 31/01/2002. Morocco will install a police and duane stations at Fort Guergerat, so there will be no need to stop in Dakhla.

For the return to Morocco, you should be at the border before 16:00. The military collect your passport, force you to sleep at the Fort, the next day they let you go to Dakhla by midday, and the next morning the police in Dakhla returns your stamped passport.
