Crossing the Chott El Jerid, Tunisia
Hi Guys, first post so be gentle!
firstly, this is an excellent resource - wish i'd found it sooner... Right, I'm planning a trip round Tunisia in June this year, I'd like to cross the Chott El Jerid but last time I was there (Feb 2008) the surface was very soft and none of the mapped tracks were identifiable. I've searched on here but there doesn't seem to be any up to date info - I'm travelling in a 4x4 so weight could be an 'issue' cheers |
Haven't got any up to date info but I did try a couple of years ago from the north. It was March and far too soft - tried a few tracks that were recomended by locals but they all ended in a bog - lots of digging and that stuff is unbelievably corrosive. You might have more luck in June with a crust but it's going to be pretty hot! Also the tracks from the south might be easier to find.
Let us know how you get on. |
Cheers for that!
We're going to El Borma first so approach will be from the south, we're planning to pick up a track near Ras El Oussaif here's our previous trip if you're interested YouTube - Taste of Tunisia 1 YouTube - Taste of Tunisia 2 YouTube - Taste of Tunisia 3 |
There is a guide in El Faouar who has a yellow unimog 404 - might be worth asking him.
Happy memories from the vids - thanks. Btw, don't forget to get a pressure wash at the garage after. |
Yer, we had similar in Morocco 2006 crossing some salt flats where the Dakar C130's land - except it'd been raining for a month beforehand....
