CROSSING LIBYA TO EGIPT
Hi
I have read post regarding Libya. I would like to cross Libya to Egipt. I will travel with only company of my bacpack. I know that i have to get a letter of invitation to be granted a visa. Questions arise: It seems that i need a guide not to get lost in the way. It is possible that a guide should go with me up to Tripoli which is near Ras Adir and from here going alone to Berdi? Are there regular buses from Ras Adir to Tripoli? is the egypcian border opened? Thanks! |
Herminio,
I crossed the border from Tunisia to Libya about 3 weeks ago with a mate on our motorbikes. We did need a guide to take us through Libya, but then we were travelling on our own. I am not sure about buses, but the the border from Libya to Egypt is definately open as we passed through there. Libya is a crazy place, but enjoy. Mark |

No need of 4x4 to travel from Tunisia to Egypt ( only roads !) ;
But I think it's no so easy to enter in Egypt with a car ( 4x4 or no ) due to the powerful egyptian ureaucracy. RR . |
In 2002 I rode my motorcicle through Lybia to Egypt.
No real problems at the border Lybia/Egypt, except we needed 5 hours only on the egyptian side to enter the country: the burocracy is a mass. No previous visa required in Egypt (we are italian), but you need the carnet the passage for the vehicle. At the egyptian border follow the following sequence: immigration office (for persons), custom office (for vehicle), traffic office (for temporary license plate and driving license). Good luck! |
Mark,
How did you manage to get into Libya without a guide? How did you get your visa? I would like to travel Libya without a guide but it seems like it is a requirement. Thanks, Matt |
Oops, just re-read your post and checked your website and I see that you did use a guide in Libya.
|
Mkirby - which travel company did you use to secure your visa and the guide in Libya? We are travelling overland (own 4X4) from Tunisia to Egypt via Libya in December this year? Thanks
|
I am intending to cross on foot into Egypt there in a few days and then return to Libya, so I will let you know what I can. In the meantime I have a question for those who have been there.
What kind of settlement is on the Egyptian border? Is there anywhere reasonable to stay, and maybe more importantly, is there anywhere to buy beer legally? |
I strongly recomend to visit Siwa and Baharia oasis, you can find a good and cheep place to sleep, and don't miss the great sand sea a few miles south. The Bedu can drive you to the desert with 4x4 for resonable prices, and there should be a bit of beer if you look around.
