Dakar to Ireland Honda C90

Hi Guys,
I ve clocked up 55k km so far on this little C90 from Alaska to Ushuaia and im now in Rio. next stop Dakar. I hit a dog about 3 weeks ago and broke two bones in my hand but its healing up grand.

However shit is actually starting to fall apart a little regarding even getting to Dakar and the problems i face when i get there.
here are some of my issues.
  • Lost my flight due to delayed motorcycle shipment, lost all the money too apparently
  • problems making the payment to freight the bike
  • Ebola ( though im not too worried about that to be honest.. even though everyone else is)
  • Severe travel warning for Mauritania and western sahara
    and
  • the unclear situation regarding the not having a carnet and how to obtain the passer avant or lassez passer when arriving at the airport in Dakar

actually i wasnt too worried about the travel warnings, as a few weeks ago on the forum here people were reporting no issue in there areas. But once everything starts to fall apart the other issues start to weight on your mind.

so my question is- has anyone came through Maui, Western Sahara and Morocco recently? and what is the general opinion ?

also
Has anyone flown a moto into Dakar and can shed some light on how the process works on the other end. esp regarding having no carnet and an old bike. Can i get the 48 hour permit there, can i get the extension to the permit there also?

ive scoured these forums for answers but im sure you'll agree the Senegal is very unpredictable regarding the carnet and passer avant situation.

any help greatly appreciated.

many thanks
Seán

There are no issues with travelling through Morocco, Western Sahara or Mauretania.
All very quiet and peaceful.
Someone else will know about the laisser passer at Dakar airport.

Hi Sean, It's Liam and c90 here.

I sent you an email through your site a few weeks ago with some tips on crossing the Sahara, getting out of Senegal and some advice on where to stay ect. I don't know if you got it?

can't give you any help on shipping the bike into dakar I'm afraid... but if it is like at the land borders then you can get a passavant. It's a tiny bike so it's fine. Anything is possible in Africa really. And if the airport is also like the land borders you'll be in a good position as the only give you a 3 day passavant usually at the border and then you have to get it extended in Dakar... so at least you'll be in town when you arrive, so that's a weight off your mind.

Don't worry about Mauritania and the Western Sahara either; they're both great places and are some of my favourite parts of my journey so far.

Sorry to hear about your problems with the flight and losing your money. That's a bitch, man!

If you've got time have a look for that message I sent you and reply if you can. Wouldn't mind some tips on South America too.

All the best,

Liam and c90 around the World
