Direct route from Nema to Timbouctou
Does somebody have details about the direct route from Nema/Oualata to Timbouctou (north of lake Faguibine). Does it mean starting from Nema and driving cross country to Timbouctou? Or is there something of a piste, passing some well known wells along the way?
Thanks, Gerbert |
Hi
And it´s safe? I think,it isn't. In 2004 some problems with outlaws Before leaving Nema, ask to the police, but attention to the extortion... The solution will be to follow Bassikounou, Nampala, Leré, Tombouctou. More details in: http://www.mosquitto.ttverde.com/ind...=118&Itemid=25 Amaga |
hi Gerbert
see also http://www.desert-info.ch/forum/view...highlight=nema more infos about wells, pistes and stuff Ursula |
We made it directly from Nema to Timbouctou, taking the route north of Lac Faguibine. Two weeks ago. It took four days in our two Toyota lanbdcruisers LJ70. Nema, Nbeiket Alhouach, Basriye, Timbouctou. One of the many smuglersroutes in this area, although we did not see any other traffic. The route was a bit disappointing, not very spectacular scenery. And many stories about bandits and Belouar (Algerian leader of GSPC). But we noticed nothing. Entry formalities in Timbouctou, in Nema Police and customs did not want to stamp our passport, so we left without stamps.

Direct route from Nema to Timbouctou
hi Gerbert,
can you give me details about the direct route from Nema to Timbouctou (north of lake Faguibine) ? you say it took four days for you, but how km ? do you have wpt ? do you think it's possible in rain season (by motorcycle) ? you can join me at boz_39@hotmail.com Christophe |
I only have the following waypoints:
Achemmim: 16,42 6,57 Nbeiket el Ahouach: 16,53 5,43 Basriye: 17,03 4,50 Well (I do not know the name): 17,13 3,37 It's about 500 km in total. A lot of sand, so almost double gasoil consumption compared to tarred road. I suppose it can be quit muddy in the wet season. The landscape was very green in october, because it rained a lot this year. |
Thank you for the waypoints.
I saw the track on maps except for the part of the last well to tombouctou. Maybe we try to pass by Ras el ma and to follow northern bank of the lake. Christophe |
I think driving directly along the north side of the lake from Ras el Ma to Timbuktu is a good idea. The landscape is more beautifull there, I read in the Lonely Planet. We wanted to do that route, but did not find the right piste near Basriye, and therefore decide to continue north-east.

Jose, you are an absolute legend!
If we ever meet on the road, i will definately buy you a few beers! Two minor questions: 1. I had thought this piste was only about 550 kms - did you take any specific detours to get to 667 kms? 2. I assume there is no fuel on this route - did you see any villages selling any fuel from containers on the piste? cheers |
Hi Matt,
1. I had thought this piste was only about 550 kms - did you take any specific detours to get to 667 kms? At the exit of Nema and around the border of Mauritania-Mali we were trying to find the correct piste. This should represent about 10 km extra (15 km at the most). Don't know about this 117 km diference..... 2. I assume there is no fuel on this route - did you see any villages selling any fuel from containers on the piste? There is fuel from drums in Bassikonou for sure. After Lere there is fuel in every large village. If you can came to Mauritania in late October, we could check out that beer! Cheers, José |
Mapsource says it's 570km, so that is closer to 550.
I noticed two of your waypoints seemed to be off course. That's wp 2 and 3. Anyway, thanks a milllion for the wps. |
