down to...Burkina Faso from Holland

hi everyone, dear sandlovers
i plan to drive through the Sahara. i have done it twice on the atlantic road. piece of cake! all alone in old peugeot305. prefer to mix with locals. it was great! Mauretania was difficult some times but that is part of the game.
i want to cross Algeria now. grew up there and saw the Sahara as a child. can speak arabic too. want to do it again in a 2WD. easy and cheap. in July-August. yes i know it's hot. can anyone tel me if the road if the road El Oued-In Salah-Tam is ok for this? further i should go with some other cars. is it possible? what extra's for the car are a must. sand plates, carter protection, showel and...water (plenty) apart.
thanks in advance for informations.

Hi,

I just went down from El-Oued to Tam and then Assamaka with the motorbike. I still would say you can travel to Tam with a Ferrari without any problems. Go for it!

Cheers,

Lalli

The road to Tam is good all the way. If you have already driven from Nouadhibou to Nouakchott with a 2WD then there is no real difference between the two routes.

The Tam-Arlit route is much easier on the car than the Mauritanian as there are less rocky areas. You should nevertheless make a protector for the oil sump but this can be done cheaply anywhere in Southern Algeria.

Take fuel for the 600kms to Arlit as there is no guarantee of fuel in In Guezzam or Arlit although you would be unlucky not to find any.

Take a shovel and some sand ladders or thick wooden planks as you will probably get stuck somewhere. There is a roadunder construction on the Algerian side but I dont know how far they are yet I think about 100km or so.

Dont travel alone although there is plenty of traffic on the route. There is no difficultyin meeting other tourists in Tam or anywhere else.
