Downloadable map of N.africa to use with garmin
The following link appears in the gps section of the bulletin board.
http://www.tracks4africa.com/t4a_maps_dl.asp I think it is a free dowload map of N.africa that can be used with a garmin gps. it would seem to be a useful thing to have. Has anyone had experience of using it? What areas does it cover? Is it reliable? I have been looking for download maps of N africa to plug straight into a garmin and this seems to be it. By the way, I am using a garmin 2610. |
Older versions of the T4A maps only covered Southern Africa. They don't list on the web site where this new one covers, so I'm not sure. The maps are excellent, though. Highly detailed and very useful. I highly recommend. cheers Graham www.africa-overland.org |
I tried to load them using garmin mapsource into my garmin V, but really I cant see how to do it.

I managed to load Morroco maps, or atleast I think I have, using the same install software that comes with the garmin 2610 (Map source software). However, when I move the screen to the area covered by the map, Morroco, I get only the Base map showing up. This is the pre installed Base map that shows up with no detail. Maybe the detail only comes up when the gps is actually being used in Morroco.
I think I must have configured the software wrongly because at the same time I loaded up Morroco the maps of UK I had previously installed were wiped. I had no problems reinstalling the UK maps and the gps is working as before. Advise apreciated. Regards Tony |
Even if you do solve this I'm not sure how useful it will be. Wherever you get them from, maps of Morocco are not that detailed and if you go further south, the landscape changes almost daily. Best to use gps as a backup and use maps and common sense etc for the rest. You can't drive around Morocco expecting your gps to give you turns etc as you would in europe. Or if you can, i would certainlly prefer not to.

I have now zoomed in a bit more on the Morroco map and can see that there are all sorts of useful 4x4 routes plus camp sites.
The problem with wiping maps when new ones are loaded can be avoided, I think, by pressing save when the map source programme is closed. The next time the programme is opened the previous uploads are still on the map source pragramme and new ones can then be added to the list. I will still take maps, of course, but I am quite happy to use gps where I can. Regards Tony |
