Egypt ferrys seem to be working normally.
We are in Khartoum checking things for going north out of Africa.
We have met travelers coming South who reported things are working normally in Egypt. The ferry to Aswan from Wadi Hailfa is taking foreigners . 4x4s have crossed both ways and bikes. We have contacted both fixers either side who reported things are working normally . We are taking the vehicle barge on the 8th we will take the passenger ferry on 11th and will post how it goes. Contact for the Wadi Hailfa ferry is Mazar Mahir +249122380740 The Uniro ferry to turkey is still running . Crossing the Sinai seems okay toTabba or Newaba for Jordan or Israel but the main road can close and you need to drive down via Sharm if it is shut . Saudi visas for transit are available in Khartoum see post on Sudan We will try and post if hear more |

Any other infos about the new road to enter in Egypt from Sudan without using the Wadi Halfa-Aswan ferry? RR. |
Apparently possible but very expensive. $3000 for 1-3 cars. Speak to Mazar (details above) for more info. You'd also have to allow for a couple of weeks to organise. In short barge is still much cheaper.
To clarify there has never been an issue with 4x4s entering from the south and there will be no issue exiting via Sinai. The problem comes if trying to import into Taba or Nuweiba. As for the Uniro to Turkey just keep your fingers crossed. It stops and starts due to ongoing commercial disputes. If not possible then the only option is to leave via Israel. Salloum border still appears shut for foreigners crossing from Egypt to Libya. |
Also I would always recommend driving the most southerly road through Sinai. Down to Sharm then up the coast. Camp in Ras Mohammed NP rather than staying in Sharm. Stunning camps on the beach. Cheap as chips.

How many days a week does the ferry leave heading north?
|
I was told by Kamal (the fixer in Aswan) yesterday that it runs every Wednesday from Damietta to Iskenderun. You have to fly yourself.
Via Kamal you can get the contacts of a fixer in Damietta so if you're interested, let me know |
Yes I'm interested in those contact details. I actually meant the ferry from Sudan to Egypt as that is my biggest planning obstacle at the moment.
|
Ah I see, well we took the ferry & barge last week so it is running again :)
But, it does not sail very regular (especially when you have a big vehicle) so it is highly recommended to contact the fixers in advance : In Sudan (Wadi Halfa) this is Mazar Mahir (00249 122380740 / 00249 911075226 after you've arranged everything Kamal (002 01005322669) will take it over on the Egyptian side. We arrived on a Friday in Wadi Halfa, took the passenger ferry on Tuesday (departs now every week on Tuesday from Sudan), our car arrived on Friday, and on Saturday we did Egyptian customs within 5 hours. But, people with bigger vehicles (>5meter) had to wait much longer on a big barge, so contact Mazar in advance to avoid long waiting periods. Good luck!! |
Ok ta. I text those numbers multiple times with no reply. Any chance of an email address?
|
Kamal I don't have, but Mazar should be enough. Hereby three emailaddresses:
mazarhalfa@gmail.com mashansharti@gmail.com mashansharti@yahoo.com Good luck! |
kamalaswanegy@yahoo.com
He checks his account only once or twice a week! If you use the search function you would find plenty of infos about Kamal, Mazar and the ferry. Good luck Stefan Gesendet von meinem GT-I9300 mit Tapatalk |

Hi DR650Bandit,
I am currently in Damietta waiting to release my car from the port after I've arrived from Turkey with UN RoRo. I can confirm that the line is stilt working and departs on Wednesdays from Damietta via Haifa to Iskendurun (Departs on Saturday from Iskendurun via Haifa to Damietta). Costs are expensive: From Iskendurun to Damietta costs 800 USD + 60 Fee in Turkey + around 500 USD arrival fee in Damietta for a 4WD. Regards Lukas |
We are still in Aswan, still waiting for my bike to be released. How i didnt murder someone today was some feat. I just got a quote ro-ro Alexandria to Italy and it was about $900 per bike! about 50%/50% split between port fees and duties and all that crap and the other 50% shipping. Dont know what we are doing yet, but thats ridiculous money. Id rather set the bike on fire and ride it through the customs office in Aswan.

when does the SALAMIS depart? and what kind of cost are we talking for it? Also anyone know the cost of the Turkey ferry for bikes?
