1-Doesnt matter where and how you enter egypt..same crazy paperworks for customs and egypt number plates...Fixer is almost needed..
2-Things getting worse in the area..Hard days in the very near future...just a friendly recomendation; better have plan B and C..

Hope all ends very soon..

Hi,

We entered Egypt a gew months ago with our 4WD and altough it's a lot of money, you wont be able to do it without a fixer we think...

Have a look on our website, we have a travellers page where there is usefull information about the fixere ect. You can e-mail him before hand to set a price ect.

Ferries to Israel and Egypt from Turkey and Greece

I'm just putting this out there for anyone who might be looking to do this trip in the near future. I recently enquired with Grimaldi about their vehicle ferry services but decided not to continue with the plan as I couldn't find a reasonable route and price through Egypt.

It was a very tedious process over a week but in summary there are weekly services between these locations. The best way to get a response is to email cargo@grimaldi.napoli.it and they're usually pretty quick at getting back, especially if you follow up with a call to +39081496111.

- Price Piraeus to Ashdod - EU297 + EU95 free-in + "customs formalities"
- Piraeus to Alexandria - EU224 + EU95 + "customs formalities"
- You can't travel with the vehicle
- You should be fine if you book 4-5 days in advance
- Takes 3-4 days
- The final schedule is usually set a month before departure

Hope that's of help to someone!

Thank you very much for info.
Just what I was looking for :thumbup1:

When you mention viable cost I assume you are referring to the exorbitant prices from Wadi halfa to Aswan, carnet etc. Is this correct or is there something else other than this that you were implying on.

Cheers

Hi Eslam,

This is good to know! Do you also do all the customs issues if travelers are coming from Turkey and want to ENTER Egypt?

Hi Eslam

Received an e-mail response on 6/11/2014 from Antares Shipping Services Egypt who state that the Ro-Ro between Egypt and Turkey is stopped now.

Please can you let us know if the Ro-Ro is running as we will be heading out Jan 2015 and looking to ship a vehicle (4x4) with two persons from Egypt across to Turkey.

Hi Mehmet

We are not afforded that luxury of a plan B or C in Africa. Hard times are already here.
It seems that whichever way you look it is getting more and more difficult to ship a vehicle(4x4)out of or into Africa, particularly with the Egypt customs situation as it is(we wont go there as enough has already been said over many threads here).
Wadi Halfa - Aswan is a nightmare all on its own even before one can contemplate about dealing with Alexandria/Port Said etc albeit that some overlanders claim the road has improved things better than the ferry - a point to be seen to believed!!
That said the problem with taking a 4x4 via Taba/Nuweiba seems just as horrendous.
West Africa with all its bureaucratic blunders...and then the Ebola thing on top of that.
Tt's just not looking good anymore.
Now getting disconsolate about the pre=planned trip and beginning to imagine that it may not be worthwhile after all. doh

Lets hope that somewhere along the line sanity and sensibility will prevail.

Told that a while ago..Entering and exiting africa through Egypt on a vehicle is almost impossible by sea-freight connection if you dont have plan B-C and so much money. On the other side, things always change fast in the area but to the worse direction.

Agreement between Turkey and Egypt on running ships between 2 countries will end at 31.Dec. and the current Egypt government already declared that agreement will not be extended even that ferry line never run regularly during agreement period because of Egypt side.

Turkish Freight companies also looking for a solution to transfer export goods to Africa and gulf area.

Will share it here as soon as a new solution is on.
Hoping peace on all problemed areas, wish you all the best for your trips.

achim-in-jordan 11 Nov 2014 20:33

Dear Mehmet,

That would indeed be bad news! Travelers posting in the German "Wuestenschiff" overlander forum just reported to have traveled without major problems on the "Cenk Y" ferry between Egypt and Turkey (end of October).

To my knowledge the ferry has not stopped yet!! From the usual websites one can see that the "Cenk Y" has arrived in Iskenderun today, coming from Egypt. So for the time being it seems to be up and running. But that doesn't exclude of course the possibility that the agreement expires at the end of the year.

We have seen several intermittent stops of these ferry lines in the past, mainly due to difficult negotiations with Egyptian bureaucracy. In most cases, the service was reinstated after a short break.

From the reports mentioned above it seemed that the bureaucracy for travellers became manageable in a reasonable time of two days in Port Said.

Greetings,
Achim

shipping out from Haifa..

Was wondering if the ferry ran from Haifa(Israel) to Iskenderun and if that would be an option rather than Damietta/Port Said??
