Getting to Burkina without carnet
We're planning to drive from Belgium to Burkina by 4X4 (maybe even to Ghana), and leave the car there.
So we don't want to get a carnet. Can anybody answer me the following questions?: - Is it enough to have a 'carte brune' for the ECOWAS countries? If so, how can it be obtained? - Any problems getting trough Mauri without carnet? - Any problems with getting into Mali coming from Mauri? (We'll avoid Senegal, to avoid all the hassle and bribes.) - Any possibilities to avoid getting your pass stamped with the car? (may cause problems to get back without a car by plane) Thnx anyway, Earthworm |
Ok. I ll start.
Mauritania is ok without a carnet , BUT they stamp vehicle details on passport .No way around that . "clearing" the passport used to cost around 2000 French Francs. (300 euros ?) Mali is ok without a carnet AND they DONT put detail in passport , hence you can discard /sell your car as desired. Same as Gambia. Burkina . Apparently they dont write vehicle details in the passport ,albeit one is not supossed to leave the country without it .(It may be like Morocco , in which they dont phisically write vehicle details in the passport , but they Know if you brought a car with ya or not ) Ghanna , Carnet is compulsory (apparently for right-hand-driving cars). Others are ok with LaziierPasse , as long as is not too obvious you intend to sell the car . (a Faked shipping booking /certificate looking as if you will ship the car back to EU via Accra is a common trick to produce at the border) . re CarteBrun is a common insurance valid for most Ecowas countries. (in your case only Mali and Burkina) . Dont worry too much about it . Just buy it at any Mali border , and that is. Have fun !. Javier. Quote:

Hi
Not problems at all to get to Ghana with out a Carnet. Mauritania; written into the passport. Mali: Nothing in your passport and have had a simple form from customs on entry and other times nothing. Difficult to Insurance on border normally do first thing in first major town. Burkina Faso: Visa on border and temp. import form which you hand over on exit. Ghana: Temp. import form and only give you whatever time you have on your brown card. insurance. Nothing in your passport. Cheers Stanley |
