Gps Allowed In Algeria, Mali???
Hi,
Planning a cross continent trip for later this year and wondered if GPS, allowed elsewhere, would be allowed in Algeria & Mali in particular. If anyone know for sure, please let me know. Safe riding! |
I think you'll find, as in Tunisia, that they are allowed but would need to be "declared" so that they can be stamped into your passport.
A guy that went to Tunisia with me in 2007 didn't know about the requirement and left his in full display on entry. It cost him 20 euros once he was past the point of no return. To avoid hassle we keep them undercover until through the border. |
Just keep them in a pocket! Remember - customs officials & bureaucrats aren't paid to take chances - if something MIGHT be forbidden, then they will seize it - they aren't interested in your trip - they are worried about their pensions in 10 years time, and what will happen if they make a mistake now...
just put it out of sight and forget it - I was with a couple of colleagues once transiting an airport in W Africa - each of us were carrying 3 (!) satphones when they were laptop size - we were asked by customs what they were - "laptops" said 2 of us - no problems.... "satphones" said one.... they confiscated his immediately until we flew out - and we were working for Brit Govt on that job... Just hide them - really it's much easier! Tony |
Hia,
>I think you'll find, as in Tunisia, that they are allowed but would need to be "declared" Tunisia is different, import of GPS to Algeria is not permitted. Permited in Mali. Regards, Yves |
Hi Yves
You said that it's not allowed to import GPS in Algeria. In 2007 , at Taleb Larbi border post they have seen we had GPS in our cars and don't say nothing about that. Had the regulation changed since 2007? RR. |
Hi Roro,
GPS is still forbidden, no change in regulation, is seems to be tolerated but I would be carefull. |
Hi All,
Thanks for your replies. It sounds then like we should rather not declare but hide them. I suppose we'll have to travel with an escort anyway so the use of the gps's won't be required - although it would be nice to have the route(s) recorded for future reference. Thanks again & safe travelling! |
