Iran to Spain
Hey guys and girls
we are just a couple of boys from New Zealand (kiwis) who plan to ride from Iran to spain in feb2011 But i hear the border between Algeria and morocco is closed any ideas on getting to spain? I know of ferrys from Algeria to spain but they look expensive. would love to ride to morocco and catch ferry from there also do we have to have guides in Libya any bits of info would be great Lifes journey is not to arrive in a well preserved body but rather to slide in sideways totally worn out shouting "holy shit" what a ride |
Unfortunately the border between Algeria and Spain is indeed closed. You could possibly get round it by going Algeria-Mali-Mauritania-Western Sahara/Morocco, but Northern Mali isn't especially safe at the moment. You could get round this by going through Niger and then Mali from Algeria, but Niger isn't that much safer, and you would have to pay for a guide as well. You would also need a guide in Algeria, and in Libya.
Libya itself is a bit of a nightmare when it comes to officialdom, as is Egypt. You might have serious issues taking bikes through both of these countries. On the other hand, if you're able to deal with Iranian officialdom, then you should be able to cope with Egypt and Libya. One other option, although far less fun, is to go from Iran through Turkey and Europe. You would find it easier, and with the restrictions on travel in Libya you might also find it more interesting. |
Thanks for the info
We are now thinking if you are going to ride all that way we really want to finish the journey it may well end up we take the ferry to spain from Algeria. We know it not going to be easy but then again life would be boring if it always was! The trip is still 14 months away so lets hope the wise leaders of Morocco and Algeria come to there senses as there say here in NZ "yeah right" Lifes jounery is not to arrive in a well preserved body but rather to slide in sideways totally worn out shouting "holy shit" what a ride |
most people take ferry from Tunisia, its generally considered safer and easier. Some parts of North Algeria are not considered that safe.

Change of plans (we are up to version 6.0 of this trip) We plan to to ride from eygpt through Libya to Tunisia and then loop back though libya back to Eygpt and fly out of Cairo. While in Eygpt we want to ride from cairo following the nile down to border then ride back up through desert to the coast of the mediterranean sea and then across into libya any thoughts or ideas would be great :palm: Lifes journey is not to arrive in a well preserved body but rather to slide in sideways totally worn out shouting "holy shit" what a ride |
