Land Rover mechanic needed in Nouakchott !!!
Just got an email from my daughter advising me that the Landy has gearbox problems and do I know of a mechanic in Nouakchott.
She is on the return leg of our overland trip to Ghana. Any recommendations would be GREATFULLY appreciated. TIA Ian |
1. Mercedes Nouakchott, Rue Habib Bourgiba - Nouakchott (also LandRover repair)
2. Serge, Garage "La Croix du Süd" - Serge has been a mechanic at the last Rallye Dakar. Address unknown - Koordinations: N 18°5.909 - W 15°58.932 in Nouakchott. Be carefull with other "mecanics" - there are a lot of wrenkers !!! |
Hi Ian,
I read from other travellers, that Serge's shop has been sold to local people. And it was also reported, that the skill of the new workers there is quite low. Kind regards Walter |
Thanks
Thanks for the advice to date, isn't the forum great :-)
Our downward trip to Ghana went without too many mechanical problems other than a knackered lower link arm bush after a 400km crossing from Chingetti to Tidjika which we got fixed in a couple of hours and a leaking clutch slave cylinder that we had a spare on board. On the return leg Beci and Steve have had to replace: Another lower link arm bush Clutch master cylinder And now have the gearbox rebuilt !!! Oh well ... all part of the fun :-) |

There are many breakers yards in NKT, all in the same area, on the west side of the dual carraigeway that passes the air port.
Not sure about Landy spares though. Also a very helpful (& large by mori standards) motor factors there as well who may be able to advise you. If needed I can try to get an approx GPS point for you |
They will probably going to stay in one of the 2-3 known places for travellers (auberge Menata, Sahara and one or two newer ones).
Let them ask the owners, and maybe visit the other auberges aswell, the owners know the town inside-out and are familiar with foreigners and their trusty or not so trusty vehicles. And eventualy can arrange things or atleast advice them. good luck |
Good Idea
They are staying at Auberge Sahara and have met up with an Italian couple who's 300TDi has fuel pump problems, so they are sorting it out between them. From what I can gather, the owner of Auberge Sahara had a local friend coming over last night and he runs a fleet of Land Rovers, so it looks as though their search is over.
But any other suggestions are most welcome. Thanks to all Ian Quote:

Many Thanks :-)
Daughter all sorted now and en route to Marakesh.
Gearbox rebuilt at Serge's and all seems fine. So ... many thanks to all on the forum Happy travels Ian |
Is Serge still there ???
|
I think I met your daughter in NKC. She was with her boyfriend getting an old LR repaired at the Sahara Garage. I can highly recommend the place to anyone. It's right behind the Mauritanian Hydrocarbon Company not far from the 2nd traffic circle as you enter the city from Nouadhibou.

I can confirm Serges shop is closed.
I don't know if Serge is still in Nouakchott, but I missed seeing him last trip there. Not that we could understand a word each other was saying, but it was great fun to hang out with him! NIck. |
