Libya
We in South Africa are being told that Libya is a no-no area for foreigners. Is that so or can one travel from east to west (to Tunisia) along the Mediterranian and inland as well, by LR, of course?
What are conditions to enter? Any help and info appreciated. P. Vrolijk |
Consiering the current political climate, Libya is probably one of the safest Saharan states at the moment.

Thank you for your comment: it's appreciated. But: is the border open? Are foreigners allowed in and what is needed to get the go-ahead? Anyone knows the answers?

go see your embassy. you almost certainly won't get a visa anywhere other than in your home country. ie DON"T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT IT! the borders certainly aren't "open" and you need guides. read more on this site by searching a little.

hey,
i think it will may be easier for a southafrican nationality, mr kedafy is proud of being part of africa, and he loves mr mandila, check it in the libyan emp. good luck |
Not so sure...
Two years ago for a group of diverse nationalities, the Pretoria embassy proved the most difficult lot. However the visa process became much more straight forward since. In any case, allow plenty of time. ------------------ Happy Travels, Andras FJ Expeditions |
We are overwhelmed by the replies we had from you all. What a pleasant experience this was. By the end of the day it seems that planning far ahead is the answer as far as Libya is concerned. We will also be looking at alternatives, depending on season and so on. Meanwhile, many thanks for your contributions.

Letter of invitation from a registerd local T.O and acceptance of the guide all along the travel is the first steep to solve. Cheers Budrinna |
September first 2004 Seems that new regulation in Libya about private cars circulation in desert (forbiden) and deseved only to local agencies are forthcoming. Cheers Budrinna |
If it's true , it's a VERY bad new !
Why going to Libya if you can't travel in desert with YOUR car ? RR. |

Hi There, I am going to Libya in October and are shocked to hear that we are not able to take our landie off road. Is this for real? I could not find any information on this on the internet or the official website for the Libyan Embassy. The embassy was closed today so i will try them again tomorrow.

the issue is to wait to be told the new regulation or get in first with some, probably little, hope of a moratorium. Cannot understand what the motive for this edict might be, a good if not equally good plan B is needed.
