Libya to Niger - late December
We're planning to do the Marlbro route (Al Qatrun, Madama, Dirkou) at the end of December or early January. We'll be in a Land Rover.
Anybody else doing this around that time? If so, would you like to join up and share a guide? Also, does anyone have recent experience of the fuel position? What is the last place in Libya and the first place in Niger where you can get diesel? Grateful for any tips on this route |
Hello Michael,
one german and some austrians will do that (contact: www.sahara-info.ch). But: It's not the Malbora - it's the Cladestines Route!!!!! Diesel (3 weeks ago: in Al Gatrun, Seguedine, Dirkou, Bilm, Agadez (maybe in Madama, I don't asked) Ferdi |
Hi!
We are the Austrians who want to travel to Libya, Niger, Burkina, Mali, perhaps Senegal, Mauretania and Maroc. We want to start in the middle of January 05 and come back 6 to 8 weeks later. We are male&female, 42 years old and drive a HZJ 78. |
hallo
here ist a german who wants to go from Al Gatrun via madama to bilma and further via agadez, mali, sengeal(?) mauretania back to europa.I havo got an HJ61 but I will leave libya between the 10th and 15th of december immanuel |
Thanks for your messages. It would be good to link up, but it looks as if the timing is not going to work. We will need to leave Libya either in the last week of 2004 or the first week of 2005.
Perhaps we will see you somewhere in West Africa. Look out for a green Land Rover containing a 52 year old man and a 45 year old woman. |
Hi,
Diesel is available for sure in Al Katrun and Dirkou; In other places it may runout. Libyan are paving the road from Al Katrun to Tummu, and a gas station is being built (early October). The 2 Libyan checkpoint at Tumu can be a hassle. Take care, José |
You don't really need a guide for El Katrun - Dirkou but it can help of course. We did this route in October, trip report on http://www.amsterdam2capetown.com/Trip%20to%20Libya

And about your cars ? RR. |
My question was to Camiel ( and I forgot to mention fuel ... sorry ) :
"How many cars for this trip (and what kind of cars : to make a comparaison about the quantity OF FUEL you need for this trip ) ?" Thanks for your reply RR. |
Sorry for slow response:
two Landcruisers, one petrol (SWB 2.4 carb), one diesel (LWB 4.0 turbo). Petrol car had approx 260l, diesel had 230l which was more than sufficient. rgds, Camiel [This message has been edited by camiel (edited 10 November 2004).] |
Hi Nailjoke,
Please keep me informed of your intended date to cross into Niger (offline if you prefer). There may be another two vehicles going just a few days earlier. As itineraries will inevitably change we might meet somewhere. Thanks Ian |
