Libya transit visa
Has anybody recent experience with travelling through Libya on a transit visa? We would like to apply for one in Cairo and then travel from Egypt through Libya to Tunesia. We heard that you do not need a guide with a transit visa.
|
I think the only way to know is to give it a try. I suppose you get one if you try long enough. That's also how it works at the Libyan embassy in Ndjamena, Chad, I understood.

Hi
I hear from a swiss guy that he got a transit visa in décember from the lybian embassy in Paris. With this kind of visa, he dont need a guide for going from tunisia to Niger but he had only 7 days( i'm not sure for the day number) for crossing Lybia. ha!!!! visa stories!!! Olivier |
I think 7 days is the normal length for a Libyan transitvisa.
|
Transit visa : 1- Must be obtained by the Libyan Embassy in the country of origin and or residence of the traveller. 2- Transit = in & out within 7 days . Validity One month from date of issuance 3- Guide is required as usual. 4- transit means travel on mains axes from border to border, and not going everyvhere Cher with sinalco Budrinna |

Libya transit visa
Hi Eric
We met an Italian who spent 8 weeks in Cairo trying to get a transit visa without success. A few people do, but I wouldn't bank on it in Cairo. There are recommended visa companies on other threads. Good luck! Bruce |

Hi,
I travelled across Libya recently on a transit visa, but in the other direction; Tunisia to Egypt. I applied at the Libyan consulate (not the embassy) in Tunis and it was ready about a week later. Talking to other travellers I met, entry requirements seem to vary depending on your nationality. Some have to provide a letter of explanation and get their passport translated into Arabic whereas I did not. Translations can be easily done in Tunis though. The visa gave me a week to travel (without a guide) from one side to the other. It was easily extended for a 2nd week in Al Khums and I should think in Tripoli and Bhenghazi also. I was told a 3rd week would not be possible. I didn't leave the route "across the top". In theory it should be same going the other way, I did meet one couple coming in the other direction, but I couldn't tell you about the application procedure in Cairo. Hope this is of some help, morch |
Transit Visa for Libia
Hi,
I am one of the Dutch that BobdeVilliers is referring to above! We travelled through Libia from Egypt to Tunesia on a transit visa about 4 weeks ago without any problems and did not loose a minute obtaining the visa! We contacted a Libian travel agency (Shati Zuara in Zuwara, they have a web site as well) and asked them to organise the visa. They only needed a copy of our passports 10 days before arrival at the border . We scanned our PP's and e-mailed it to them. When we arrived at the border, the guide was waiting for us with the visa and maps and guidebooks and all the likes! Really a wonderfull surprise. The guide was reasonable good in English and he had his own tent and sleeping bag with him! (his name is Salah) He organised everything at the border and made the entry a piece of cake. All the services cost us Euro 280,- including 3 days guide (Euro 25,- a day). For that price he rides in your car though. But it was worth every penny. I can recommend every body to do the same. Saves a big headache. Regards, Noel Di Pietro, back home again :-( www.exploreafrica.web-log.nl |

there is no such thing as a transit visa, however you can get a normal visa to travel from border to border, you need at least 3 days however you would pay for 4 days, 3 days for your journey and an extra day for the guide to meet you at the egyptian border (omsaad).

I'm hoping to ride through Libya from Egypt to Tunisia in a few weeks (end of February, beginning of March, 2008). Is there anyone who would like to split costs on a guide? AND can anyone recommend a useful guide service? I'd prefer to get a "transit visa," but I've read everything ranging from it's easy to get and, it doesn't exist. Sigh.

Hello,
Maybe not for overlanders but... I have got transit visa (72hrs) at Tripoli airport. I needed only translated passport and onward ticket. The airline (Afriqiyah) provided me unexpectedly with free accomodation in the downtown and airport transfers. Best regards, |
you can get a help from Nathalie

Don't get your hopes up as an over-lander for a "transit visa" if applying in Cairo. I met two guys who have been here waiting on the papers for over a month now. One finally got the visa, but he's traveling via public transportation on a Taiwanese passport (it took him a month of waiting, though). The other fellow is a Brit who, after waiting for over four weeks, has finally decided to hire a guide to take him through. If you want to try your luck without a guide service, it may be better to try somewhere other than in Cairo!
Thanks for the list of tour operators, Chris. That should be handy. Too late for me, unfortunately! |
