Looking for RECENT information about Algeria

Hello Friends,

I want to cross the border from Tunisia with Algeria at the end of August 2012. I want to leave Algeria from Oran to Spain by Ferry. I want to stay for something like 2 or 3 months in Algeria. I'm Dutch and looking for help for the applying the Visa. But i am looking for information for best places to stay and concerning the RECENT security. For this reason i'm looking for people who traveled RECENTLY in Algeria on an Motorcycle.

Who can help me?

Maybe we can meet to!

Bye,

Guus

Hi Guus,

Unfortunately, there is almost nobody who travels with his bike/motorcycle in northern Algeria now...
I'm looking for the same infos.
You can see another very recent post about Aures mountains.

Hello,

Why you want to stay 3 months in Algeria ? Want to ride all the country ?
For north you can ride without guide but you should stay in principales roads, off road is not advised.
In the desert the guide is mandatory for strangers.

Got it!!! My Visa without guide for the North!

I will cross the border from Tunisia to Algerie at the begin of September. My Visa is valid for 30 days. Maybee i will extend. I will make this decision in the second week while i'm in Algiers.

I would like to meet other travelers!!! If there are any....

Bye

Why may be? Because you are waiting for your visa (as I!)?

Visa Valid for 30 days, exit at 3 October.

Hello RoRo and KTM990.

I have an 30 days Visa end need to leave at 3 October. I want to be in Algiers from 8 September. Then I need to make up my mind. Do I stay max 30 days, or do I extend with another 45 days. Extending my Visa takes 2 weeks. My Visa is without a Guide!

I travel on an Honda Africa Twin. I can travel independent. I Camp, use Hotels, B&B and Surf couches etc. I am an active member of CouchSurfing – The world’s largest travel community.
By Using CS I made friend who I did not met in person yet. I am invited by several people, to stay at there houses this in September.

For October, and half November, I don't have any plans yet.

I look at the messages from KTM990 and RoRo and compared with You i'm an absolute beginner in Africa:-) I want to learn a lot from You 2 ;-)

Because te border with Morocco is closed I go to Spain and visit Family and friends there. I live in Montpellier/South of France. Actually i'm kind of homeless, but i rent an summer Holliday house at Carnon-Plage or stay at friends places when i'm there. I drive back home (its so near). Then I have my travel break for 2 months. After that I go to Morocco, West Cost down to South Africa. Then I have my 2 months travel break in West Europe by airplane. After coming back in South Africa I go east cost up, back to Montpellier. Who trip will take several years. I travel something like 5 months and have an travel break for something like 2 months. I want to travel the coming 10 years.

I like to meet people, visit touristic places, don't like high way's, look always for the smaller then small lines on my map to drive. I am experienced on asphalt, bad roads, gravel. But i'm not an experienced driver in sand and muddy roads. But this is definitely something I want to learn. For this reason I drive an Honda Africa Twin. I like to makes photo's and communicate on Internet, if available. I use a Garmin 276C and openstreetmaps. This is funny, because I need always an Michelin map with it because of the problems with the arabic characters. I managed to use this in Tunisia, and i found the border near Tabarka/Tunisia to Algeria, so i'm not completely lost. Using Waypoint is something i still need to learn. But this is because i'm driving roads until now.

I don't now How You want to travel! Can You tell me e bit off Your ideas?

Thanks

Guus

Hello Zebra AT,

Its good to see some travelers around Algeria.
But do you have some planned road/tracks to do ?
Which region you want to visit ?
I know the north est of the country where I have rode during some years.
The tracks in the Aures mountains ( a part of the Atlas) and the mountains of the coast are very good to do.

I never had an issue where i rode here, but much of the time i stayed in the road.
I slept in the hotel near the massif , in Timgad and Arris ( youth hostel) , some time also i slept in house of peaple.
It's a beautiful region to explore.

Thanks KTM.

Traveling in Algeria right now

I'm in Annaba since 3 september. Very friendly people. A lot of roadblocks. Traffic is fast and chaotic. Motorcyclists wearing flip-flops, jeans en t-shirt, nothing else. Living at peoples houses. I like it here! Everything is going smoothly now.

We are planning a motorcycle trip through Algeria November-December 2012 ! But still trying to get our visa (hotel vouchers needed but we don't want to book a guided tour - problem)..

So i will keep an eye on this forum - any practical paper information is always welcome of course :D

I ll post our solution (once we found it) for the "proof the hotel you are staying" - problem !

Best regards and good luck on your trips! :scooter:
