Mali (Tombouctou) in April?

Hi,
I suddenly got the urge to head to Africa instead of SA. Can anyone tell me if the area of Tombouctou is bearable in April or even June (heat wise). I don't intend on doing extreme pistes but rather just get there from Bamako and just wander around the area. How about Tombouctou to Niamey? Am I going to suffer?
