Mauretania money/visa etc
heya,
I'm in Casa now and just got my Mauretania visa - pretty straightforward really (though I wouldnt call the consulate people friendly) Anyway - I asked for two weeks and now my visa states it's only valid upto july 22nd (two weeks from today) - does this mean I have to enter before that day or have to exit before the 22nd? Is it possible to renew your visa in Nouakchott? Being stupid, I forgot to take any foreign currency with me to Morocco and I guess I'll need some in Mauretania Any suggestions on where to get Euros or Dollars in Morocco? Or would I be fine taking Dirhams into Mauretania? (can one export Dirhams?) Is there a Mali consulate/embassy in Nouakchott or can I buy a visa at the border? Or should I go by Senegal instead? Anyone heading the same way? and would like to team up or even give me a lift (worth a try I guess) - mail me (snailhead@hotmail.com) best Guy |

>>(can one export Dirhams?) Hi !! Best option I see is getting Dirhams in a CashPoint (lots ! around CASA , Layyoune , DackLA ! ) , and change those dirhams in Nouadibou. I remember I got about 24-25 UM per Dirham (which is not bad). I'd suggest you change in the official offices , (main Street , just front the police ) ,lots of official moneychangers . GET A RECEIPT . Yoy MAY need it later . *important* =dont let know moroccan douanne you are exporting Dirhams ! (you'll dont need to ... and you'll never know ... ) = , but DEFINITELY LET the MAURITANINAN DOUANNES KNOW you are IMPORTING DIRHAMS (declare them in the "currencies declaration form". have a nice day ! . |
hi,
"but DEFINITELY LET the MAURITANINAN DOUANNES KNOW you are IMPORTING DIRHAMS (declare them in the "currencies declaration form" ???? why??? ------------------ best regards from Portugal bernardo feio lightweight www.AventuraS3.com |

>>>>>???? why??? Hi !. As far as I can remember , it is forbidden to export currency (and gold?) outside Maurtania .At the border @ gerguerat , the Maritanian Customs ask for a "currency & gold declaration Form" , in which the traveller is supossed to declare all -foreign- currencies with him . The idea , -I think- was to avoid people exporting foreign currency (i.e. Euros) by ilicit sale of Cars. Upon exit , they can (and sometimes , they do ) search you , and -if found any Euros - , you should then show your Currency Declaration form , showing you already have them at entry. In CS book , there's a reference of one car seller , being caught at the border this way! . A few years ago , that was even worse , as ,they also checked HOW did you spend your foreign Currency (hence the need to keep the official receipts when changing money ). Then , you should show Customs that In other words: In Mauritania , customs is only interested on your operation involving Euros , being importing them , Converting them , Earning them , and re-Exporting them . Keep those receipts ! . |
thanks!

It is strictly prohibeted for you to export Dirhams outside Morocco , anything more than 1000 DH will be seized by the customers....be carefull ...and to avoid any risks you can simply go to any bank in Morocco and buy Euros or US dollars ..they are available everywhere... have a good one |
It is possible to change dirhams into Euros in Morocco if you have a receipt saying that you bought the dirhams with hard currency. If you dont have a receipt then ask other tourists or on the campsites. Marok is right that on leaving Morocco they may confiscate dirhams. They are easy to change in Nouadhibou you get a little less in Nouakchott and bad rates everywhere else.
