Just got the new 2015 Adrar map from Justus at Bab Sahara (€10 + post)
1:600k scale, covers round 300 x 300km centred around Chinguetti. I recall years ago on here scoffing at talk of a bold new road from Zouerat to Tidjikja via Atar. Well, according to this edition of the map that may happen, not via the direct piste (Atar-Tidj - R10 in the book) but along a route from Oujeft (south of Terjit) running SE. That route's always intrigued me since a mate did it 10 years ago. Looks like lots of switching between sandy canyons and stony plateau tops, but a few villages and other tracks branching off too. Now it may be a little better formed the ~300km may well be bikeable, making a good loop back north along R10 to Atar. Nothing jumps out on Google Earth (10 years old this week, fyi) so may be pre-emption. |

Interesting news. You can see incomplete tarmac, then a prepared surface and even a bridge/ford east of Oujeft. Don't recall ever seeing a bridge like this in Mori, but then not been there for years. A similar well prepared track up to Rachid from Tidjikja.
Hard to locate anything more than a faint junction under 'Timinit', but I presume it's in the Faraoun area. From there ~ 250km to Tidjikja via Rachid. Makes sense to route it via the southern Adrar villages, even if it's less direct. Planning to get down there this winter on bikes. |
Ah, GM is quite up to date as it seems... impressive.
As of now, tarmac extends just a bit further away from Oujeft than what can be seen therein, but not yet to the bridge. The sealed segment after Oujeft is not supposed to be used yet (rows of stones placed on tarmac to force people to use the nearby piste, as you have probably seen many times on new roads elsewhere); but it looks like it's just a matter of time. In March, work was ongoing up to about 19 54.698 N, 12 54.687 W, where the road descends into the oued (the place I was referring to as Timinit, but actually rechecking on Ganidini's book the village is actually reported to be called Agroub). There has been some work on the opposite side of the oued as well. All in all it's not a particularly nice ride with the ongoing works, but at least a quick connection to get to the (very rocky) piste reaching El Berbara from the plateau. |
