Two questions: 1)re. travel between Mauritania and Morocco - I hear that those with an African passport (I carry a South African passport) can only travel south from Morocco to Mauritania, and not back north to Morocco. Sounds bizarre, but is it true? 2) Is the minimum USD30 per day expenditure in Mauritania enforced? I'm planning on getting by on quite a bit less...

There is no mimimum per day expenditure in Mauritania.

According to the (very up to date) information on the Sahara Overland Website it is now possible to go back from Mauritania to Morocco. This used to be forbidden.
