Mauritania to Morocco open and legal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We have just heard from three separate groups (already in west Africa) that the border is now officially open to leave Mauritania north to Morocco. If true, a long overdue step...

Hi Beatrice,
There is no problem about driving back to Morocco from Mauritania as I did it last april. Just try to avoid tuesday and friday which is very busy on the track due to the incoming car convoy from Morocco. There is a heavily mine section between the railway track and the border and many drivers hire a guide in a camp site in Nouadhibou. You have two good camp sites where you can ask : camping Abba, chez Momo or camping de la baie des lévriers and ask for Ali the owner who is a very helpful and foxy guy and will make arrangements for you. Personally, I drove through with my own G.P.S. waypoints but am very reluctant to give them as the sand sections can have changed in the meantime. Do not hesitate to contact me if you wish further information. Jean-Paul |
No problem. We did however hire a guide in Nouadhibou. Avoid getting to the border at lunchtime (obviously!!), and make sure to have some food as you will have to spend one night at the border camp ( a really filthy place b.t.w.), while your passport is being checked in Dakhla. At the time of crossing, February 2001, there were no official convoy dates, they just bunched up whatever vehicles there were, and a lone soldier escorted us to Dakhla where we got our passports back.Good luck.

Do you know of a reliable guide to take us up through morocco from mauritania, is it possible to give us some names that we could ask for?

Try the owner (can't remember is name) of Camping Asimex at Nouadhibou.
Efficient, reliable, and not expensive José |
