Morocco in august (too hot)?
Friends want me to go with them to Morocco from the second half of august/beginning september.
Going from Oujda,Midelt, Mhamid, Tata to Tantan by a non airco Land Rover. I have doubts over the temperatures on the southern part of the trip. Temperatures rise over 40°C in the shade? Is it wise to travel in this period, Thx |
Hello Spaghetti,
no, not even warmer than in Europe: for example Midelt Average temperature in august 2003: 25.9 °C Freiburg (Germany) Average temperature in august 2003: 26.0 °C Antwerpen (near Sibiria) Average temperature in august 2003: 20.5 °C Source: http://www.wetteronline.de (Klimarechner) Ferdi |
Midelt is in the middle of two mountain ranges, and very close to the biggest, so hardly a fair example. Also 'south' in Moroccan terms means south of the mountain ranges.
So in Mhamid, Tata & Tan Tan it could be extremely hot, and very unpleasent if you break down (especially on a piste). I suspect like many people, when there you will alter your plans and head for the hills or coast like the Moroccans do. But your on the cusp, so it may start to cool down a bit. As you head out of the mountains and into the desert you'll get a feel for it. If it is too hot, but you have to travel anyway, get up at 5am, travel till about 10am and then lie about for the rest of the day in the shade sampling local produce ;-) |

Tunisia August/September
I have the Same Thing with Tunisia in August/September. Is it too hot or doable? The planned Route is from Tunis over gsar ghilane to Camp Mars. :Beach:

I only recomend you stay near the coast. The Atlantic coast have interesting areas for off roading from Sidi Ifni.

Tunisia
Regarding Tunisia, you can drive more or less direct from the oasis at Ksar Ghilane to Camp Mars.
However, I don't think it's a good idea in August/September as the sand will be extremely soft and the dunes on the direct route are tricky at the best of times. Also, there's been a lot less traffic out there since the Arab Spring and you'll be trailblazing most of the way. Not a good idea in the summer. IMHO, I'd follow the piste from Ksar Ghilane towards Douz, past the old fort on the right and continue on the piste until the cafe on the right. Take a 90 degree turn here and follow the perimeter of the National Park keeping the fence on the left. Follow the fence SW then SW then E and then you can break SSE towards the mountain Tembain. There is a section of dunes to be crossed here but keep heading directly for the mountain and you should be OK. There's a well and a small nomad encampment behind Tembain and this is the route they use. Camp Mars is just on the SE side. Looking forward to the trip report! Happy trails, Peter |
