News. Guides in Algeria like in Libya

It seems that a guide is needed officially to travel in Algeria, always, even in tarmac roads, since the last month. Just like it works now in Libya.

Any ideas wether it will be possible to get a transit visum in Niger? I'd like to head back trough Algeria in spring somewhere.

Last november I travelled to Adrar by plane and then from Adrar to Timimoun and back to Adrar by public transport (together with girlfriend + 1,5 year old child). At that moment there were no restrictions at all. No roadblocks, no policecontrols nothing. The situation was very calm in the Adrar region. We arranged a visa via a hotel reservation. That's all. Nothing had changed (with regard of the visa apply) before the hostage situation
I don't know about the situation in other regions.

Greetings,

Wilmar

Robbert,

I don't know where you are now, but I would like you to know that in Ghana it's very easy to obtain a visa for Algeria. We got one this year just before the kidnappings begun, the people at the embassy were very friendly. I took us three days, some phone calls and visits to get the visa.
Let me know if you want to have the adress.
Greetings,
Andres

Thanks!

Rob

No more news from Algeria ?
Is anybody coming back from a trip ( with his car ) in this country ?
What is the actual situation at the border post of Taleb Larbi ( from Tunisia ) ?
On the french site someone says that no tourist can enter in algeria without a guide since 20/12/2003

I have returned from Algeria 3 days ago. I travelled without a car. I entered from Tunisia in Babouch (northernmost entry) without any problems. Then I went to Annaba, Constantine and Alger. Unfortunately I got sick and stayed in Alger for 6 days. Then I had to take a flight to El Oued because I had no more time (Police officer asked me on the airport about travel agency in El Oued, but I told him that I am going straight to Tunisia). From El Oued I took a shared taxi to the border. Again, no problems on the border, but it is a very busy border because of many Algerians entering Tunisia.
